The Elmhurst Police Department has announced that on Saturday, June 16, a roadside safety checkpoint will take place on a major roadway in Elmhurst beginning at 11 p.m. on Saturday night and continuing until 3 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Elmhurst continues to take part in a year-long grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) that aims to save lives by reducing fatal and serious injury crashes. To accomplish this goal, the grant provides funding to local police departments for additional enforcement of DUI and seatbelt laws. As part of this grant, periodic roadside safety checkpoints will be set up throughout the year.
During the roadside safety checkpoint, vehicles will be stopped at a predetermined interval and checked for violations. These types of checkpoints have proven to be a significant deterrent to impaired driving, which in turn reduces traffic fatalities caused by impaired drivers.
As always, motorists are encouraged to drive carefully, to buckle up, and not to mix drinking and driving.
