Saturday, Oct. 14 — Ignite Fitness fundraiser for ECAF
From 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., a fitness competition will be held at Ignite Fitness, 263 No. York, for the Marc P. Frontier, a resident who passed away suddenly in September of 2015. Ignite will also host a kid-friendly BBQ fundraiser and atet-party from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Proceeds for this event will benefit the Elmhurst Children’s Assistance Foundation (ECAF). • From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wild Meadows Trace, the Elmhurst Park District presents its annual Family Fall Fest. Wear your Halloween costume and bring a treat bag to enjoy trick-or-treating at Safety Town, games and crafts, an inflatable corn maze, family photo opportunities, food trucks and much more. Free and open to the public.
• Geologist Sara Kurth, presents an introduction to rocks and minerals for ages 8 to adult at the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, 220 Cottage Hill Ave., starting at 10:30 a.m. Learn to identify minerals through basic hands-on identification including observation skills and hardness tests. Great for rockhounds, Boy and Girl Scout merit badges. Scout groups require adult supervision. Parties of 10-or-more are encouraged to schedule a private class. • A pre-concert Oktoberfest fundraising dinner will kick off the opening of the ESO’s season. From 5:15 p.m., to 6:30 p.m., concert-goers can enjoy grilled bratwurst and roast pork loin accompanied by traditional German side dishes. Tickets: $30 per person. • At 7 p.m., the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra opens its 57th season under the baton of Music Director and Conductor Stephen Alltop, with Mozart and Beethoven Gems, at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church (ECRC) with a concert of music. From 12 – 4 p.m. there will be an open house at Fire Station #2, located at 601 S. York, to celebrate National Fire Prevention Week with the Elmhurst Fire Department. Learn about fire safety while enjoying games and activities, along with light refreshments. There will be a high angle rope rescue at 12:30 p.m., firefighter fashion show at 1:30 p.m., simulated EMS response at 2:30 p.m., bouncy house from 1 to 3 p.m., AirMed1 Helicopter at 3 p.m. (weather permitting), and a child safety seat booth. • Now through Nov. 26, the Elmhurst Art Museum is showing Hebru Brantley: Forced Field, a solo show of new work by Chicago-based world-renowned artist. Brantley’s pop-infused contemporary art is inspired by Japanese anime and the bold aesthetics of street art pioneers Jean Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring.
• Over the weekends now to Oct. 15, Greenman Theatre Troupe will perform Urinetown the Musical at their performance space at 232 S. • EXTENDED through Dec. 31, the Elmhurst History Museum hosts Disco Demolition: The Night Disco Died. It started as an off-beat baseball promotion called “Teen Night” designed to sell tickets at Comiskey Park and gain listeners for a fledgling FM radio station—until it devolved into one of the most infamous events in Chicago’s rich baseball history. Disco Demolition Night exploded on July 12, 1979 in the middle of a White Sox double-header and it remains one of the city’s most controversial sports history moments. Media sponsor: WLUP-FM.
