Elmhurst American Legion baseball team drops pair of games

Post 187 scheduled to open 11th district playoffs this week.

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 Muddogs’ regular season hit the home stretch with a pair of recent games against Mt. Prospect and Round Lake.

In a 7-6 loss to Mt. Prospect Post 525 at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst, the visitors scored two runs in each of the first and second innings to take a 4-0 lead. Mt. Prospect upped its lead to 6-0 at one point. Elmhurst scored four runs in the sixth inning for the final margin.

Post 187 had 10 hits, limited its foe to five hits, but made six errors in the field.

York’s Austin Gelsomino had a walk. York’s Mike Bernal drew two walks. York’s Nick Lee had a hit, a run scored, an RBI and a walk. Fenton’s Tim Beecroft had a hit and a walk.

IC Catholic Prep’s Michael Liszka had a hit and a run scored. York’s Tamaine Durr had a hit, a run scored, an RBI and a walk. IC Catholic Prep’s CJ Slowinski had a hit and a run scored.

Fenton’s Alejandro Orosco had a hit, while Elmwood Park’s Ray Abarca had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. IC Catholic Prep’s Griffen Eichhorn drew a walk.

IC Catholic Prep’s Austin Reed went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. IC Catholic Prep’s Michael Hoffman had an RBI. Reed doubled and Abarca had a triple.

The Muddogs stole four bases with Eichhorn, Beecroft, Reed and Bernal each stealing one base.

Fenton’s Jordan Vogel started the game and went the first three innings. He allowed only one earned run and struck out three. Reed pitched the final four innings and struck out seven.

Post 187 also dropped a 6-2 game to Round Lake American Legion Post 1170 at Plunkett in Elmhurst.

Round Lake led 2-1 after the first inning and 3-2 after three innings. Post 1170 scored three runs in the fifth to pull away.

Elmhurst was limited to three hits and made four errors. Gelsomino had two hits and a run scored. Abarca had an RBI, while Bernal had a hit and an RBI. Lee walked once, as did Durr. Bernal stole a base.

Durr pitched the first four innings and allowed four hits, while striking out four. Orosco pitched the last three innings and allowed one hit, while striking out three. Only three of Round Lake’s six runs were earned.

The Muddogs had a doubleheader with Frankfort Post 1977 scrapped this past weekend that was scheduled for Main Park in Frankfort. One of the games, that will count as an 11th district conference game, was slated to be made up this past Monday at Plunkett in Elmhurst.

Elmhurst was 10-6 heading into that final makeup game against Frankfort. Elmhurst had a 6-1 11th district record heading into the final Frankfort makeup.

Post 187 is scheduled to open up 11th district playoff action today at the Wheaton College Field located behind Carol Stream Post 76. Wheaton Post 76 is the host of the district tournament and the 2nd division tournament that follows.
