Anglers 15 and under are invited to drop a line at the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s 31st annual ‘Just for Kids Fishing Derby,’ on Sunday, June 11, from 8 a.m. to noon, at Silver Lake in Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville.
Kids can learn about fishing and advance their skills during this free family-friendly event. Prizes will be awarded to winners in four age groups for the largest fish in three species categories ? bass, bluegill and miscellaneous ? as well as to winners of the casting contest.
“There’s nothing like seeing the excitement on a child’s face when he or she catches a fish for the first time,” said Forest Preserve District Commissioner Linda Painter, District 3. “It’s pure magic.”
Kids should bring their own gear; bait will be provided while supplies last. Although if you can, bring a few different baits for trout to see which bait they like best. The more bait, the bigger the catch! The free derby will take place rain or shine. Participants can register online or at the derby. People registering at the derby can download and complete the registration form in advance if they wish.
The main entrance to Blackwell is on the north side of Butterfield Road, 0.25 mile west of Winfield Road, and 1 mile east of Route 59. For more information, call Visitor Services weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 630-933-7248.
“This popular event is a fantastic family opportunity to get kids outdoors and introduce them to the fun sport of fishing,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore.
