Long-time community leader, volunteer
Arnold R. Schenk of Elmhurst, May 23, 1918 – April 18, 2017, passed away following a decline in his health. His wife of 75 years, Dora, passed away in January of this year. He is survived by his four children: Ron (Charlotte) of Dallas, Texas; Nancy (Jack) Kalionzes of Leavenworth, Washington; Phil (Devney) of Elkview, West Virginia; and Barbara (the late Marty) Ferguson of Deerfield, Illinois; grandfather of Nathan, Ashley, Becca (Marc), Zee, Paul (Carrie), Mark and Tom (Emily); great grandfather of Ben, Matt, Claire, Charlie and Lily.
Service to community and church, involvement with family, support of orchestra and opera in the Chicago area, engagement in travel to experience history and natural beauty, and a rich home life …these elements came to light in the person of Arnold Schenk.
Arnold attended high school and junior college in the Morgan Park area of Chicago and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1939, where he met Dora. His love of Boy Scouting led him to a career with the Boy Scouts of America. During the following 42 years Arnold held executive positions in Peoria IL, Beloit WI, Alton Ill., and Madison Wisc. Later he was on the Region 7 staff based in Oak Brook, the Chicago Area Council, and a national representative of Boy’s Life Magazine.
His dedication to community service manifested itself in his involvement in the Rotary Club of Elmhurst, Boy Scout Retiree programs, service in many capacities with the First Congregational Church of Elmhurst, Walk-In Ministry, Elmhurst College and Community Committee, and other organizations.
Arnold’s love of symphonic and operatic music as well as his organizational capabilities benefited the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra where he was a board member for many years and the Chicago Lyric Opera for which he lectured locally to give background information on current performances.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 1 p.m., at the First Congregational Church of Elmhurst, 235 S. Kenilworth Ave., with a reception to follow at the church from 2-5 p.m.. James Joseph Migala, M.D.
James Joseph Migala, M.D., 76, of Elmhurst, died peacefully at home April 14, 2017, of Pancreatic Cancer as did his precious daughter, Juliana, in 2013. We grieve his loss, but rejoice that he is now with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Cherished husband of Judith nee Hoffman; dearly loved father of Michael (Christine), Lucy (Paul) Jaske, Rebecca, Eileen (Steve) Rogstad; wonderful grandfather to Fiona, Nicholas, Wesley, Emily, Ryan, Megan, Heidi, and Joshua; son of the late Emil and Irene nee Bartkowicz; brother to Mary Lou (John) Balazs, Paul (Diane), and Steve. Brother-in-law of Bob and Anita Hoffman; fond uncle of many nieces and nephews, and one of many great cousins. He treasured his friends. Born June 22, 1940, in Chicago, Jim briefly lived in Milwaukee, grew up in Chicago, went to St. Patrick’s High School, Loyola University, and graduated Stritch Medical School 1965. Married in 1964, completed his internship and residency in Orthopedic Surgery at U. C. Irvine, Calif.; drafted 1970-1972, served as a Major at Ft. Stewart, Ga.; lived in Lafayette, Calif., while on staff 1972-1973 at Kaiser Permanente Hospital, Walnut Creek. He settled in Elmhurst in 1973; opened his practice, was on staff at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and subsequently was Medical Director of Surgery until retirement. He was Vice-President (1991-1993) and then President of the Medical Staff at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital from 1993-1995. After accepting Jesus as his Savior in 1977, he demonstrated his faith the rest of his life, including becoming an ordained minister. He loved God, his family, friends, and sports, especially golf. Our 1967 blue and white VW Bus was part of our family, taking us cross-country many times. He eventually enjoyed our 30-year parade of cats. He mostly willingly agreed to a lifetime of u-turns, some of his own choosing. He encouraged each of us in our gifts and quests. He was a gentle, loving, generous, patient, caring and wonderfully wise man. We are grateful for him and he will be dearly missed. Thank you to all who assisted in his care. A Memorial Service was held at Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 Spring Road on Friday, April 21, 2017, with a Memorial Service at 6:30 p.m. Interment took place Saturday, April 22 at Bronswood Cemetery, 3805 Madison St., Oak Brook. Margaret “Peg” M. Werly nee Campbell, 89, longtime resident of Elmhurst and Boca Raton, FL. Beloved wife of the late Emil W.; loving mother of Bill (Barbara), Tom (Laura) and Jamie (Libby); grandmother of Jackie (Eric) Randall, Dan (Liz), Greg (Pamela), Tim (Andrea), Annie (Alex) Sosnov, Jeff (Stacey), Scott and Stephanie (Mitch) Seebach; great grandmother of Finley, Ellis, Brody, Gabby, Max, Claire and Lydia; sister of Thomas Campbell and the late Eileen Husch; aunt of many nieces and nephews. She loved gardening, sports and her family. Funeral Mass was held Monday, April 24, 2017, at Visitation Church. Interment Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
