DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin has announced that a Chicago teen charged with hijacking a woman’s car at gunpoint from an Addison Popeye’s restaurant parking lot has been sentenced to eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Deondre Logan, 18, appeared at his sentencing hearing this morning in front of Judge Brian Telander, who handed down the sentence. The state had requested a sentence of 21 years. On May 10, Logan entered a blind plea of guilty to one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking, a Class X felony.
Logan’s case was initially assigned to a juvenile courtroom. On Jan. 29, 2021, the state filed a motion to transfer Logan’s case to adult court. On March 9, Judge Brian Jacobs transferred the case to adult court where Judge Telander set bond at $250,000 with 10 percent to apply. Logan has been held in the DuPage County Jail since that time.
On Jan. 23, 2021, at approximately 10:46 p.m., Addison police officers responded to a report of a vehicular hijacking near the Popeye’s restaurant in Addison. Upon their arrival, officers learned that the victim, a 20-year-old female, exited her vehicle and began walking toward the restaurant.
When the victim was approximately fifteen feet away from her car, she was approached by three men, two of whom were armed. One of the men, later identified as Logan, threatened her to give up her belongings, such as cash, cellular telephone and her car keys, to them or they would kill her. After the victim turned over her belongings, Logan and the other men got into her car and fled at a high rate of speed.
As they fled, a nearby patrol officer began pursuit, and with assistance from the Illinois State Police and their helicopter, were able to track the vehicle to the south side of Chicago.
When officers approached the vehicle, the men fled the scene on foot. Logan, however, was apprehended at this time by Chicago police officers and returned to Addison. On Jan. 25, 2021, Logan appeared in juvenile court where he was ordered to be detained.
“The initial charging in juvenile court and subsequent transfer to adult court of the defendant in this case sends the message that regardless of your age, if you commit a violent gun crime in DuPage County you will be caught, charged, prosecuted and held accountable for your criminal behavior,” Berlin said. “Thankfully, the victim in this case was not physically harmed.”
