At the village board meeting on Thursday, Dec. 16, Carol Bauer (left), blood drive coordinator for the Village of Lombard, was presented a Governor’s Volunteer Service Award for her decades of promoting and organizing blood drives. State Rep. Terra Costa Howard (right), who nominated her for the award, was at the board meeting to publicly present her with the award. The award is issued by the Serve Illinois Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, which is administered by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS). Bauer joked that people who recognize her refer to her as the “vampire lady.” As of press time, the village was 30 units short of collecting 17,000 units of blood since 1988.
