On Monday, Dec. 20, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Carol Stream Chief of Police William Holmer announced that bond had been set for a Carol Stream man accused of firing several times into a Carol Stream residence. Jimmy Calan, 18, of the 600 block of Burns Street in Carol Stream, appeared before Judge Brian Telander who set bond at $250,000 with 10% to apply. Calan has been charged with one count of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class 1 Felony) and one count of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon (Class 4 Felony). Also charged in the incident is an Aurora juvenile. The juvenile appeared at a detention hearing this morning where Judge Anthony Coco order he be held until at least his next court appearance which is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 29. He has been charged with one count of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class 1 Felony), one count of Possession of a Stolen Firearm (Class 2 Felony) and one count of Possession of a Firearm, Under 18 Years of Age (Class 4 Felony).
On Sunday, Dec. 19, at approximately 3:30 a.m., Carol Stream police officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 600 block of Willow Wood. Upon their arrival, officers observed the window of the sliding glass door severely cracked and two gun-shot holes in the ceiling. Officers also found 11 shell casings in the north parking lot of the apartment complex. It is alleged that Calan and a 16-year-old juvenile went to the residence and once there, threw a rock at the sliding glass door. It is alleged that when an occupant of the residence opened the sliding glass door to see the cause of the disturbance, Calan and the juvenile opened fire. It is further alleged that after the shooting, Calan and the juvenile fled the scene. Through the course of their investigation, authorities identified Calan and the juvenile as suspects in the shooting. A short time later, both suspects were located in Glendale Heights. It is alleged that when the juvenile was taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit, officers located a 9 mm handgun approximately two feet away from him.
“The type of violent, irresponsible behavior alleged against Mr. Calan will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be met with the full force and effect of the law,” Berlin said. “Thankfully, no one in the residence was injured as a result of this alleged behavior. I commend the Carol Stream Police Department for their outstanding work in the quick identification and apprehension of Mr. Calan and his alleged accomplice.”
Calan’s next court appearance is scheduled for arraignment on January 13, 2022, in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.
