Mildred Smith, 99

Mildred Reed Smith, long-time resident of Elmhurst, died September 23, 2016 in Phoenix, Ariz., at the age of 99.  She was born on January 19, 1917 in Tallmansville, West Virg., and started school at age 6 in the 4th grade because her older sisters taught her their lessons at home before she ever started school.  She graduated high school at age 15 and college at West Virginia Wesleyan at age 19 in 1936.

Mildred taught English at the high school in Buckhannon, WV, and obtained a master’s degree in English Literature at Northwestern University in 1942.  She married Ray M. Smith of Chicago and accompanied him to various U.S. Army bases, where he was a flight instructor until he went overseas for combat.  They settled in Chicago after he returned in 1945, and in 1955 moved to Elmhurst, where she lived until 2012.  She obtained a second master’s degree in library science after Ray was disabled in the 1960s, and was the librarian at Churchville Junior High School until she retired in 1982.

She was active in the League of Women Voters, the Chicago Genealogical Society and the Elmhurst Genealogy Forum. Mildred enjoyed playing bridge with friends, and traveling with Elderhostel tours and with her sisters. She volunteered at the Elmhurst History Museum for 30 years before moving to Phoenix to live with her daughter.

Mildred is survived by her daughter, Philinda Smith Hutchings (David Henslee), and two sons, William Mitchell Smith and David (Julia) Reed Smith, and two grandchildren, Matthew Reed Smith and Sarah (Dan) Smith Cline.  A Memorial Service will be held at the Elmhurst History Museum Education building, 120 E. Park Ave., Elmhurst, on Nov. 2, 2016, at 11 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Emery K. and Lula E. Patrick K. Greeley 54

Patrick K. Greeley, of Villa Park, passed away recently at the age of 54. Beloved husband of Mary Ellen Richards-Greeley, loving father of Sean Michael Greeley, fond brother of Thomas, Mary Greeley, Diane Greeley, Jeffrey (Nancy) Greeley and the late Sandra Greeley, dear son of the late Thomas and Patricia Greeley, fond uncle of many. Patrick was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan. Visitation was held Saturday October 1, 2016, at Steuerle Funeral Home, 350 S. Ardmore Ave, Villa Park. George Poulos, 91

Former long-time Villa Park resident

George Poulos, Jr. of St. Charles, Illinois, died peacefully on September 21, 2016 in Sycamore, Illinois, at the age of 91. Beloved husband of the late Anita “Tina”, loving father of Linda, Karen and Donna (Steve), Gary (Donna) and Gregory (Missy), grandfather of Michael (Stephanie), Melissa (Jeremy), Marcus, Eric (Ania), Christina (Zach), great grandfather of Lillian, Allison, Carter, Camden, Ryan. George was born and raised in Chicago, he and his late wife Tina were long time residents of Villa Park and St. Charles. George served in the U.S. Coast guard in WWII, was an avid reader and current-events enthusiast, a die-hard Cubs fan and restaurant proprietor ( most notably the Del Marre in Oak Park and Westchester with his three brothers Danny, John and Jimmy). George was an active supporter of the Villa Park VFW Post 2801 and enjoyed watching his grandkids and great grandkids participate in sporting activities. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 21, 2016 from 2-3 p.m. at Hosanna Lutheran Church, 36 W 925 Red Gate Road, St. Charles. Mary Carwell, 92

On September 17, 2016 at the age of 92, Mary Carwell died peacefully at her home in Lombard, surrounded by her family. Known as “Gmom” to her grandchildren and friends, Mary always had a welcoming smile and was ready to feed anyone who came through her door. She loved music, chocolate éclairs, the Chicago Cubs, and going to HiView Restaurant with her family.

Mary was born Mary Onischuk on March 3, 1924 in Osceola Mills, Pa., to Andrew and Sophie Onischuk. She married Glen Mansfield Carwell on December 16, 1944 at St. Michael Russian Orthodox Church in Newark, NJ. They moved to Chicago in 1946 then to Villa Park in 1951. Mary supported the Villa Park Library, Cubs Scout Pack 38, Boy Scout Pack 138 and the Franklin School PTA. Mary and Glen were married for 49 years until Glen’s death in 1993. Mary was the last surviving member of her seven brothers and sisters.

Mary is survived by her sons Robert (Mary) Carwell, Kenneth (Kathy) Carwell and Glen (Ann) Carwell as well as her grandchildren Kelly (Dan) Moy, Erin Carwell, Emily Carwell, and Jacob (Kara) Carwell.

Mary was extremely proud of her grandchildren and their athletic pursuits while attending Timothy Christian, cheering them on and hosting their teams for spaghetti dinners. Anne B. Sulli

Anne B. Sulli, nee Boscia, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2016, after a life filled with wonderful adventures and countless blessings. She was the beloved wife of 67 years to her late husband, Vito Joseph Sulli; loving mother of Susan (Jack) Washam and Steve (Karen Watts) Sulli; and adored grandmother of Kathryn Washam. She was the dear sister of Oreste (Diane) Boscia and Helen (the late Robert) Maganini and aunt of many. Anne’s work was her passion and hobby; to travel the world and share her knowledge with others. Her enjoyment of the arts and Italian cooking was only surpassed by her love of family. She exuded grace and class, never leaving the house without her high heels and perfect hairstyle and was a champion writer of “thank-you” notes.
