LOUISE TURNER BARNES
Louise Turner Barnes, 96, a resident of Lombard since 1957, died peacefully on May 11, 2020, at her daughter’s home in Elmhurst.
A proud native of Virginia, she was born in Painter, Virginia on March 1, 1924, to Joshua and Genevieve (Ott) Turner. She was a 1944 graduate of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.
On January 19, 1946, she married James A. Barnes, a naval officer whom she had met when she was a college student and he was stationed at Camp Peary, near Williamsburg, before his deployment to the Pacific during World War II. They were happily married for more than 48 years until his death in 1994.
She is survived by her four children: Elizabeth Morse (Phil) of Los Alamitos, California; James A. Barnes Jr. (Juli), of Leesburg, Virginia; Martha Akre (David), of Elmhurst; and Carroll Barnes (Ted Isenberg), of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and five grandchildren: Maddy Barnes, Katie Socienski, Will Barnes, David Akre Jr., and Elizabeth Akre. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Betty Turner and Carroll Kurtz.
Louise was active in several organizations, including Friends of the Helen M. Plum Memorial Library, Lombard Garden Club, American Association of University Women and P.E.O., and she was a longtime member of Community Presbyterian Church in Lombard. She was a lover of nature and enjoyed reading, traveling with her family, discussing politics, listening to music, caring for her cocker spaniels and playing bridge with her friends. Most of all, she lovingly embraced her role as a wife, mother and grandmother.
Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, there will not be a funeral service. Burial at Chapel Hill Gardens West, in Oakbrook Terrace, will be private.
