Preserving our ‘heritage’

Dr. Thomas Scott (left photo) received the 2019 William J. Mueller Heritage Award for Lifetime Achievement in Historic Preservation on Thursday, Nov. 21, from the Lombard Historic Preservation Commission. Tom has served as chairman of the Maple Street Chapel Preservation Committee for many years, and witnessed restoration of the paneling, the calico windows, the start of the Reade Room Museum, the more mundane but necessary repairs of the foundation, and the heating system. He continues his work with the committee to this day. He and Shirley were major fundraisers for the chapel, among others. He was also there for the induction of the Chapel on the National Register of Historic Places. Tom and Cynthia Masterson (right photo) received the 2019 William J. Mueller Heritage Award for Leadership and Advocacy in Historic Preservation from the Lombard Historic Preservation Commission. The couple restored the Lackner Building at 128-132 W. St. Charles Road. They also own the house to the west of the Lackner Building at 134 W. St. Charles Road. One of the original buildings forming the downtown in the 19th century, it was built across the street but moved by Conrad Fabri in 1880 to where it now stands. Both buildings received Local Landmark Status.
