Glenbard Parent Series Dec. 3 & 4 events: Addressing youth selfie-syndrome and childhood defiance
The Glenbard Parent Series (GPS) Navigating Healthy Families will present two programs with internationally renowned educational psychologist Michele Borba. The events to be held on Dec. 3 and 4 will be based on two of her bestselling books, “UnSelfie,” and “No More Misbehavin’.”
Hear Borba present UnSelfie: Why Empathic Kids Succeed in Our All About Me World at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Glenbard East High School, 1014 S. Main St. in Lombard. According to University of Michigan research, today’s teens are 40 percent less empathetic than the teens of 30 years ago. Borba confronts the selfie-syndrome with a research-based plan for parents of children of all ages. Self-absorption hurts students’ academic performance and resilience and can lead to depression or bullying behaviors. Once children are grown, a lack of empathy hampers their ability to collaborate, innovate, and problem solve – all of which are must-have skills in today’s world. Borba explains that empathy is a trait that can be taught.
Borba will present No More Misbehavin’: Challenging Behaviors in Young Children and How to Stop Them at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, at the Community Consolidated School District 93 Administration Center, 230 Covington Drive in Bloomingdale. This conversation will address how parents can inspire their children to choose appropriate behavior — without yelling and meltdowns. Using information from her book “No More Misbehavin’,” Borba will teach the secrets to fostering self-regulation. Attendees will also learn how to identify their own discipline strengths (and weaknesses), understand consequences that change behavior, and discover the most common mistakes parents and guardians make when attempting to influence a child’s choices and actions.
Borba is an educational psychologist, parenting expert and former classroom teacher. She is recognized globally as a go-to expert regarding childhood and teen issues.
