DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Lay recently announced that bond has been set for a Villa Park man charged with hijacking a woman’s car from a gas station.
Michael Davis, 35, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Liam Brennan set bond at $ 250,000 with 10 percent to apply. Davis is charged with one count of vehicular hijacking (Class 1 felony), two counts of attempt vehicular hijacking (Class 2 felony), one count of aggravated battery in a public place (Class 3 felony), one count of possession of a stolen motor vehicle (Class 2 felony) and one count of aggravated dui (Class 4 felony).
On Sept. 29 at approximately 5:10 p.m., officers with the Villa Park Police Department responded to a call at a Walgreens store, regarding a subject who attempted to enter two cars in the parking lot. It is alleged that Davis approached an occupied vehicle in the parking lot, entered the passenger seat and demanded the victim to drive away.
It is alleged that when the victim exited his vehicle to attend to another person in the back of his car, Davis exited the passenger seat and went around the car to the driver’s side and attempted to get in the vehicle. It is alleged that Davis then ran towards another occupied car in the parking lot and punched the windows multiple times telling the female driver to let him in.
When the driver refused, it is alleged that Davis then fled the area on foot to a nearby Thorton’s gas station. It is further alleged that at the gas station, Davis attempted to enter a woman’s car while she was at a gas pump washing her car windows.
It is alleged that Davis entered her car and drove away, dragging the victim as she held on to the steering wheel. After the woman let go of the steering wheel, it is alleged that Davis drove away in the woman’s car and eventually fled westbound on Roosevelt Road after crashing into an outside store display and two vehicles at the gas station.
It is further alleged that Davis was then involved in a crash in Lombard. Davis then allegedly fled the crash scene on foot and was taken into custody near the scene of the crash by Lombard Police officers. It is alleged that Davis had a BAC of .261.
“It is alleged that within a very short amount of time, Mr. Davis’ brief crime spree claimed eight victims and caused significant damage to gas station property and three vehicles,” Berlin said. “These allegations are outrageous and will be met with the full force of the law. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured as a result of Mr. Davis’ alleged actions.
“I would like to thank the Villa Park and Lombard Police Departments as well as the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office for their work in quickly bringing this matter under control. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Jennifer Lindt for her work on this case.”
“I would like to commend the efforts of our officers, detectives and the officers of the Lombard Police Department which led to the quick apprehension of and identification of the alleged offender in this terrible series of events,” Lay said. “I would also like to thank the members of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office for the assistance and guidance provided in bringing forth these charges.”
Davis’ next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 31 for arraignment in front of Judge Brennan.
