Costa Howard to discuss environmental issues tonight
State Rep. Terra Costa Howard, D-Glen Ellyn, is hosting an Environmental Issues Town Hall Meeting with the Illinois Environmental Council on tonight, Aug. 8, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Glen Ellyn Police Department, located at 65 S. Park Blvd in Glen Ellyn. Costa Howard will be joined by representatives from the Illinois Environmental Council, the Citizens Utility Board, Sierra Club and DuPage’s School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education (SCARCE) to discuss the various state and local initiatives to make Illinois a leader in green policy. Costa Howard’s Environmental Issues Town Hall Meeting is free and open to the public.
‘Wonderworking Icon’ at Aug. 11 service
The public is invited to a special Akathistos Service to be held on Sunday, Aug. 11, at 7 p.m. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church at 893 Church St. in Elmhurst. As part of the service, the church will welcome the “Wonderworking Icon” of St. Anna, the mother of the Theotokos. The icon usually resides at the monastery of St. Tikhon’s in South Canaan, Pennsylvania. Members of the public of all faiths are invited to attend the service. Parents are encouraged to bring their children with their backpacks filled with school supplies so that they might be blessed by the Holy Mother of God and her mother, St. Anna, as they begin their classes that week.
York Center Basketball
Spend Thursday nights playing basketball and enjoying some friendly competition at the York Center Park District. Online or phone registration is required as there will be no registration at the door. Register early because the maximum to play each night is 15, and only people who have paid in advance will be allowed to enter the building. Car wash Aug. 11
The Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation’s Junior Board, comprised of 40 students representing eight area high schools, will host a car wash on Aug. 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the North Entrance of Elmhurst Hospital (purple parking lot). Funds raised will help support Elmhurst Hospital’s commitment to fighting the opioid epidemic through the development of programs and services designed to reduce the misuse of opioids. Program on U.S.-Cuba relations Aug. 13
On Tuesday, Aug. 13, at 7 p.m. at the Glen Ellyn Police Station Community Room at 65 S. Park Blvd., historian Walt Zlotow presents the ongoing history between the United States and Cuba. In 1898, the United States declared war against Spain after the sinking of the Battleship Maine in Havana harbor. Zlotow explains how this act led to the U.S. intervention in the Cuban War of Independence. The speaker, a Glen Ellyn resident, has followed U.S.-Cuba relations for decades and visited there in 2018.
