The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations. Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.
Assault, battery
June 30
Police said that while investigating a complaint of a domestic disturbance in the 100 block of Linden at around 1:09 p.m., Margaret Schmidt, 19, of Elmhurst, became violent and punched a reporting officer in the chest. Schmidt was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer and resisting arrest.
June 29
The victim, an assistant manager at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller, told police at around 8:35 a.m. that he observed William Reese, 74, of Des Plaines, allegedly stealing wooden pallets from the loading dock area. The victim confronted the suspect. Police said Reese threatened to kill the victim and his mother, then drove a vehicle over the curb and toward the victim and two other witnesses. Haley Gase, 22, of Chicago, was a passenger in the vehicle, according to police. The suspects were located and stopped near York and Arthur. Reese was charged with aggravated assault and theft. Gase was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

July 2
A victim in the 200 block of E. Columbia told police at around 12:49 a.m. that an unknown suspect(s) threw a piece of concrete through the back window of his vehicle, which caused the window to shatter. Video surveillance showed a suspect riding a bicycle in the driveway at 12:45 a.m. The suspect left the camera’s view, at which time the sound of breaking glass was
heard.
June 26
A victim in the 300 block of W. Grand told police at around 3:09 p.m. she arrived at work at a car dealership at around 7 a.m. June 25 and parked her vehicle. When she left work, she noticed her side-view mirror was missing. Video surveillance shows a landscaper mowing the lawn in the 300 block of W Grand. The side view mirror was recovered in the area where the lawn bag was emptied. Further investigation is pending.

June 30
Police said Benjamin Lefevre, 32, of Elmhurst, was located in the 100 block of E. First highly intoxicated and unable to care for himself. Lefevre was charged with disorderly conduct.

June 29
A victim in the 300 block of W. St. Charles told police at around 10:31 p.m. that while driving through Elmhurst, she and suspect were arguing, and the suspect allegedly struck her. The suspect claims the victim reportedly scratched him in the face. No injuries were located on either subject. Both subjects went their separate ways.
Police said a mother and daughter ensued in a verbal argument in the 100 block of S. Linden at around 8:40 p.m. when the suspect threw a wooden chair and then later punched a door. The suspect was advised not to come back to the residence until she was no longer upset.

July 4
Kelly W. Palmiter, 42, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia in the 100 block of Pick at around 6:28 a.m. Police said Palmiter was located behind the wheel of his vehicle and was found to be intoxicated.
July 3
Marlena N. Sadowicz, 23, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI in the 500 block of S. Washington at around 11:50 p.m. According to police, a complainant related that they observed the Sadowicz driving erratically and without headlights on I-290 and subsequently followed the vehicle to the above location. Officers arrived at the scene and Sadowicz was found to be under the influence of alcohol, police said.
June 30
Lennin Oliva Bailon, 22, of Bensenville, was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident and improper lane usage near Grand and Lake at around 1:05 a.m. Police said the suspect was intoxicated and stated that he struck a light pole.
Police said that subsequent to a report of a driver slumped behind the wheel near Grand and Lake at around 7:48 a.m., a reporting officer made contact with the occupants and found they had all fallen asleep while in traffic. According to police, upon further investigation, it was found that Matthew Szyska, 21, of Chicago, was driving while under the influence of alcohol. He was charged with DUI and improper parking in a roadway.
Theft was reported at a restaurant in the 900 block of N. York at around 11:28 a.m. A complainant stated an unknown suspect(s) took two chairs, a table, and umbrella that were placed in front of the restaurant. A check of surveillance footage shows a vehicle pull in front of the restaurant, then leave after 5 minutes in an unknown direction.

Kwamaine Person, 23, of Matteson, was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Michigan at around 12:31 a.m.
June 28
Yolanda Coleman, 48, of Villa Park, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 11:33 p.m.
Austin Perez, 23, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, failure to yield one full lane upon approaching an emergency vehicle, no driver’s license and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Second at around 1:12 a.m.
Jennifer Sosa, 39, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and disobeying a traffic control device subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 11:17 p.m.
June 27
Roni Ramos-Lopez, 19, of Wood Dale, was charged with DUI, no valid driver’s license, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Church and Grand at around 11:59 p.m.

June 26
A victim told police at around 6:45 a.m. that he left his work van parked in the parking lot of Elmhurst Hospital overnight. Upon returning to his van, he noticed an unknown suspect forced entry through the side cargo door of the van.
Harassment, threats
July 1
A victim at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller told police at around 12:12 a.m. that last week, as she was leaving work, a dark colored SUV occupied by four male teens yelled and cursed at her. On the above date, as she was leaving work, the same vehicle occupied by four male teens yelled and cursed at her again. The victim followed the suspect vehicle, and when both vehicles were stopped in traffic, the suspect driver and a passenger exited their vehicle, yelled obscenities, approached the victim’s vehicle, and attempted to grab the door of the victim’s vehicle. An investigation is pending.

July 1
Kawann Moore, 34, of Chicago, was charged with obstructing identification, driving while license suspended, driving without headlights and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Holly and Sherman at around 3:19 a.m.

July 4
Janae A. Badillo, 25, of Oak Lawn, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of cannabis, unlawful use of an electronic communication device and no insurance near North and Melrose at around 1:17 a.m. Police said Badillo was observed texting while driving. The officer made contact with Badillo and detected the odor of burnt cannabis coming from inside of the vehicle, according to police. Police said Badillo was found to be in possession of more than 10 grams of cannabis.
July 3
Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Melrose at around 11:14 p.m., an officer detected the odor of burnt cannabis coming from inside of the vehicle. According to police, Benjamin Chavez, 29, of Blue Island, was found to be in possession of three partially smoked cannabis blunts. He was issued citations for possession of cannabis and no seat belt.
July 2
Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Emery at around 9:06 p.m., officers detected the odor of burnt cannabis coming from inside of the vehicle. According to police, Ronald E. Robertson, 21, of Maywood, admitted to being in possession of cannabis, which he voluntarily provided to officers. A search of the vehicle yielded suspect Xanax® and Valium® pills, police said. Robertson was taken into custody and was transported to the police station where he was later released without charges, pending lab results for the controlled substance pills, police said. Robertson was issued citations for possession of cannabis, no front registration plate displayed and tinted windows.
July 1
Police said officers responded to North and Route 83 at around 10:40 p.m. for the report of an intoxicated subject. The complainant related that the suspects entered a vehicle and left the area. Officers located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The suspects were found to be in possession of heroin, crack pipes, used syringes and cooker kits. Suspect 1 was taken into custody and transported to the police station. Medics transported suspects 2 and 3 to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment. Suspects 2 and 3 were subsequently released from the hospital and were transported to the police station. All of the suspects were released without charges pending further investigation.
June 28
Victor Rodriguez, 18, of Addison, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at around 2:51 a.m.
June 27
Fred C. Kaminski, 65, of Westmont, was charged with possession of cannabis and no seat belt, while Dennis Cermak, 18, of Clarendon Hills, was charged with possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 6:29 p.m.

A victim in the 1000 block of N. County Farm told police that an unknown suspect broke into an equipment trailer which was parked outside a job site in the above area sometime between the above dates.

July 5
Commercial burglary was reported at a mobile phone store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 1:47 a.m. Police said officers responded to the store for a burglar alarm. The window appears to have been smashed and fresh pry marks were observed on the door of the business. It appears that multiple phones were missing.
March 25-July 4
Theft was reported at a business in the 600 block of N. York. Police said that on March 25, the complainant brought an Apple iPad to Gadgets Express for repair. Since that date, the complainant has been unable to contact anyone at the business. Numerous attempts were made to contact the business both in person and via telephone with no results. On July 4, the reporting officer went to the store and found the business had vacated the premises and left no forwarding information.
July 3
A victim in the 100 block of E. Columbia told police at around 11:39 a.m. that she attempted to secure an out of state apartment and sent cash to an unknown suspect, later to find she was the victim of a scam. She also provided the suspect with her personal information. The victim was given an identity theft pamphlet and was advised to contact the credit bureaus.
July 1
Residential burglary was reported in the 900 block of Spring at around 1:46 p.m. A victim told police that he was approached by a solicitor offering to do home repair work. The victim allowed the unknown suspect into his house to obtain water. Once inside the residence the suspect tampered with the victim’s wallet then hurriedly left the residence. The victim inspected his wallet and noticed he was missing cash.
Attempted theft was reported near St. Charles and Poplar at around 1:06 p.m. A victim told police that two unknown suspects described as black males attempted to steal a Ridgid sewer camera. The suspects fled south on Poplar then east on May St.
June 29-July 1
Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 1000 block of N. County Line between the above dates. Police said an electric company was completing work on County Line Road. Sometime between the above dates, an unknown suspect(s) burglarized two of their vehicles and attempted to burglarize one of their trailers. A cargo truck was entered and tools were stolen. A cargo truck had the passenger door window smashed out. A trailer was damaged in an attempt to gain entry.
June 5-July 1
Forgery was reported in the 200 block of N. York. A reporting officer spoke to the assistant finance director of a business who stated a check was forged and cashed. It was later found that the check had been fraudulently cashed. Further investigation is pending.
June 29
Identity theft was reported at a car dealership in the 200 block of W. Grand at 5 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect described as a black male purchased two vehicles using information, which later returned flagged for fraud. An investigation is pending.
Residential burglary was reported in the 200 block of E. North at around 9:22 a.m. A victim told police that a listed suspect entered her home without authorization and stole cash, credit cards, and other property. The suspect made unauthorized charges on the victim’s credit cards. An investigation is pending.
June 28
Theft was reported in the 900 block of S. York at around 6:26 p.m. Police said a victim went to pay for her items while checking out of a food store and noticed her red leather phone case and iPhone 6 were missing, along with her driver’s license, Chase Visa, Costco card, and cash. While the victim’s husband was canceling the credit cards, he learned a purchase at Louis Vuitton® and a purchase at the Apple store. The victim said a suspect described as a white male distracted her about an item being gluten free or not. This is when she thinks someone else went into her purse.
Theft was reported in the 400 block of N. Addison at around 6:30 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) took her lawnmower sometime between 1 a.m. and 2 p.m. The lawnmower was left outside because the shed was full.
Theft was reported in the 500 block of S. York at around 10:25 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect stole her wallet from her purse while she was at a business. She later learned an unknown suspect used her Visa card at Nordstrom. The victim is missing numerous credit cards, a driver’s license and cash.
June 27
A juvenile suspect was issued a citation for retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 6:44 p.m.
Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of W. Armitage at around 1:30 p.m. A victim told police that he was advised by a letter on the above date from a bank that a credit card was issued in his name. The victim did not open a credit card.
June 25
Police said a reporting officer conducted a traffic stop on a white GMC Safari in the 300 block of N. Route 83 at around 12 noon and cited the driver for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and speeding. The driver reportedly showed the reporting officer a picture of an Illinois driver’s license, which appeared to match his likeness. The true owner of the driver’s license came into the station and indicated that he was not present for the stop. An investigation to follow.
Jan. 1-June 4
Police said that subsequent to a report of a theft and a stolen motor vehicle in the 100 block of Fellows Court, Drake Daraitis, 21, of Elmhurst, was stopped near York and North. According to police, Daraitis was found to be driving the victim’s stolen auto. Items allegedly stolen in the burglary from the victim’s storage unit were located in the suspect’s possession, according to police. Daraitis was charged with unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle and theft.

July 1
Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and York at around 10:33 p.m. an officer detected an odor of cannabis coming from inside of the vehicle. According to police, the passenger, Devonica Syas, 19, of Chicago, was found to be in possession of cannabis, while the driver, Holly Gast, 32, of Schiller Park, was found to be in possession of a metal knuckle weapon. Syas was cited for failure to wear a seat belt, possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia, Gast was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, driving while license suspended and no insurance.
June 28
A reporting officer in the 900 block of N. York responded at around 1:26 p.m. for a suspect allegedly openly carrying a handgun in his waistband. Upon arriving, according to police, the reporting officer observed a black and silver handgun clearly held in a holster in the rear waistband of the suspect’s pants. Mark A. Carr, 33, of Elkhart, Ind., stated he lives in Indiana and came to Illinois to pick up some property from Howard Buick. Police said he was unaware that his gun license was not valid in Illinois. He was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, and released on bond. The Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun and magazine were submitted into evidence.
