York wrestler Antonio Gutierrez is headed to the Class 3A state meet after placing fourth at the recent Class 3A Conant sectional in Hoffman Estates.
Gutierrez will bring a 35-10 record into the state finals meet Friday in Champaign on the campus of the University of Illinois.
Gutierrez, a senior, came out of the gates charging at Conant. He won his opening match 12-0 against a Conant wrestler and won 12-2 in the next round against a Maine East opponent. Gutierrez then lost 4-0 to the DeKalb wrestler who won the sectional title at 145 pounds.
Gutierrez came back to score a 2-1 win in his first wrestleback match and then lost by fall in 1:18 in the third-place contest. The 2-1 win secured Gutierrez a spot in the state finals.
