Shirley Falter Hurt, age 91, passed away in Las Vegas, NV on July 10th. She was born in Chicago, IL to Leon J. and Lillian M. (nee Hedrick) Falter.
She and her younger brothers, John (Jack) and William (Bill) were raised in Elmhurst. After graduating from York Community High School in 1951 she earned a B.A. from MacMurray College (Class of1955) and a M.A. from Michigan State University (Class of 1956).
Shirley was a teacher at Bryan Jr. High School from 1957-1972 when she left to take a teaching position in Saudi Arabia, working for Aramco Oil. She retired to Las Vegas in 1985.
An extensive traveler, the Peace Corp. was her next adventure-teaching in the Philippines. After the Philippines, Shirley was hired to teach at Wuhan University in China.
Shirley stayed in Las Vegas and volunteered at the UNLV library and taught ESL. She was a college basketball fan, NFL fan and later a fan of the Las Vegas Aces of the WNBA.
Shirley was a lover of cats and writing. She had a close group of friends and neighbors and kept in touch with many people she met during her world travels.
Her parents and both younger brothers preceded her in death. She is survived by her two sisters-in-law, Lois (Jack) and Elizabeth (Bill), as well as being an aunt to nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
Shirley will be missed by her family and her friends.
