According to a release issued by Elmhurst Police Chief Michael McLean, on Friday, Jan. 5, at approximately 2:45 a.m., the Elmhurst Police Department responded to the Courtyard Marriott hotel at 370 No. IL Rte. 83 for a 911 call, reporting gunshots heard outside the building. Upon arrival, officers found no activity outside the hotel or nearby. Officers interviewed witnesses at the hotel who reported hearing several gunshots outside from the Route 83 side of the building, prompting the 911 call.
Shortly thereafter, a hotel guest came down to the lobby and reported to officers that a bullet had gone through the window of their third-floor room at the time of the incident. No one was struck by the gunfire, McLean said.
Evidence technicians processed the scene and determined a 9mm bullet had entered the third-floor window and struck the headboard of a bed inside the occupied hotel room. Officers also discovered a second bullet strike to the building on an exterior concrete wall. The trajectory of the bullets indicated they originated from the vicinity of the IL Route 83 roadway. Area law enforcement agencies were advised of the incident.
At 4:43 a.m., an alert resident called 911 to report a suspicious vehicle parked in their neighborhood on James Court in Glendale Heights, near North Avenue. Glendale Heights police officers responded and found two men asleep in a Lexus sedan with a handgun and shell casings visible inside. Glendale Heights police detained the two suspects and contacted Elmhurst police. A search of automated license plate reader cameras determined the suspect’s vehicle was recorded near the hotel at the time of the shooting.
Elmhurst police took custody of suspect Kyle Lochman and the other male. Evidence technicians recovered a Glock 9mm handgun and several shell casings inside the vehicle.
Continuing the investigation, detectives learned Lochman had been traveling back from a casino with two other men in the Lexus at the time of the incident. It is alleged Lochman recklessly fired his Glock handgun several times out the passenger side of the of the Lexus sedan as they drove south on Rte. 83.
In consultation with the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s office, Kyle V. Lochman, 21, of the 400 block of Cliff Court, Lisle, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and reckless conduct. He was transported to the DuPage County Jail and was granted pretrial release at first appearance court on Saturday, Jan. 6. Lochman’s next court date is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 29 in DuPage County Circuit Court.
