Lombard/Villa Park obituaries—September 22

IRENE DONLEAVY
Irene (Nan) Donleavy of Lombard, IL, passed away on Monday, September 12, with her eldest son by her side at Elmhurst Hospital. Born Irenia Antonaroli in 1931 to parents Reniero and Altomira Antonaroli in Bradley Beach, New Jersey, with younger sister the late Evria Damon.
A 1949 graduate of Asbury Park High School in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and as a Cum Laude graduate of Syracuse University she was an active member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Nan’s outgoing demeanor and ability to connect with nearly everyone she met equipped her well for her next role as a Pan Am stewardess in the 1950s during a golden age of air travel. Occurring before a golden age of databases, she presented herself as Irene Anthony to avoid connotations from her original family name of Antonaroli. This opportunity to see the world brought her to iconic cities most only read about like Paris, Berlin, Frankfurt, Karachi, Nice, Tehran, and Johannesburg to only name a few. Nan always relished these times and the unique opportunity she was granted.
As the 60’s dawned she was later married to the late John Joseph Donleavy Jr. and resided in Rosemont Pennsylvania outside Philadelphia where she raised two sons, John J Donleavy III and Guy Quinton Donleavy. Known as Aunt Nana to family and friends, she often became the confidant to many who knew her.
Ever social and sophisticated, Nan was recruited into working in the beauty industry and became a very successful sales representative for Lancôme cosmetics. She thrived on the interaction of people and relished in her ability to help improve their condition. She was especially sought out for helping brides put their best face forward on their most celebrated day.
A Visitation was held on Monday, September 19, 2022, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St. in Lombard, followed by a Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church; 114 S. Elizabeth Ave, Lombard. Interment was private.
Nan supported the Lombard Citizen Police reps, who helped Nan on several occasions, even assisting her by putting groceries in her fridge after a stop for driving too slow. For those unable to attend the family requests that if people prefer to make donations in lieu of sending flowers that donations can be sent to the Citizens Police Academy of Lombard (villageoflombard.org).
