City, Special Kids Day plan family event; Offers chance to learn inner workings of city government

Save the date of Sunday, July 31 for “Special Kids Day, City Works!” which will take place from 12 noon – 4 p.m., at Elmhurst City Hall, 209 N. York St. This new family event, designed for kids and adults with special needs and their families, is brought to you by the Special Kids Day organization and the City of Elmhurst.

Come explore how the City of Elmhurst works. Learn from our firefighters, paramedics, police officers and the public works team. Enjoy a quiet space for story time by the Elmhurst History Museum. Elmhurst’s Mayor and City Council members will take your “vote” to find out some of the City’s favorites!

In partnership with Elmhurst’s Special Kids Day organization, the City of Elmhurst aims to create a unique experience for individuals with special needs; a “City Works” tour to learn how cities operate. This will include information from different departments with demonstrations and hands on activities, public safety tips, and a fun opportunity tailored for individuals with special needs to interact with the city employees and elected officials who provide essential services to the community.

Registration opens on Tuesday, July 5. Stay tuned for more information.

Started in 1990, Special Kids Day began as a holiday event for children with special needs and their families to visit Santa Claus without obstacles. Today, Special Kids Day has evolved into a not-for-profit, 501(c)-(3) organization dedicated to providing celebratory events for children with disabilities and their families in environments designed to accommodate their special needs.
