DOROTHY MILLER
Dorothy “Dot” (Allen) (Johansen) Miller departed from this world peacefully on Tuesday, March 29, 2022. She was born in Lombard, Illinois, on March 13, 1924, to Ray and Bertha Allen and was the third of five children born to them. She spent her early childhood in Lombard. When she was ten years old, the family moved to Sioux City, Iowa, for a brief time before returning to the Chicago area. The family lived in Chicago where Dorothy attended and graduated from Austin High School in 1942. During WWII, she attended a church that had a program where the young people could become pen pals with some of the GI’s overseas, one of which was Robert Johansen. When he came home, he decided to find out who had written the lovely letters to him. They were attending the same church so it was not difficult to find her. The two began dating and eventually married in August 1949, and returned to Lombard to raise their two daughters. They divorced in January of 1962. In 1974 she married Melvin Miller. They were married for 34 years.
Dorothy was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Lombard and after her husband passed away she moved closer to where her roots were and sometimes attended the church she attended as a child. She will fondly be remembered as always cheerful, hard working, with a wonderful sense of humor. When the family got together, her siblings always had funny stories to tell about their youth and life experiences while growing up together.
All of the nieces and nephews loved hearing these stories. Dorothy had a love of reading that we believe she inherited from her mother. She loved listening to all kinds of music as well. Dorothy also loved looking at her many photographs and spent hours organizing and putting them into albums that her children love to this day.
She was a loving mother to Kristine (Colin) Gray, Donna (Fred) Martens, their brother Scott (Joanne) Johansen, and her stepson Rodney (Patsy) Miller. She was a caring grandmother to Kimberlee (Dave) Gray-Kaliski, Daniel Martens, Douglas (Justina) Martens, Elizabeth (Thomas) Martens-Wilbur, David (Melody) Martens, and Kari (Dave) Miller Esser. She was a fond great grandmother to Haylee and Ian Kaliski, Nathan, Austin, Tyler, Joseph, and Lauren Martens, and Hailey, Kristina, and Samuel Martens. She was an aunt who was loved dearly by her many nieces and nephews and also many friends and extended family members. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Miller. She was loved by many that knew her and will be missed by all. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
