Standing under the flags of America and Ukraine, this group of neighbors came out Sunday, March 6 to the home of Alexa and Jason Umbs to show support for Ukraine as Russia continues its onslaught. Alexa has many relatives living in Ukraine in fact, one was once the Finance Director for the country. “I just couldn’t cry in front of the television news anymore,” Alexa said. “I had to do something.” Enlisting the support of her neighbors, she collected ribbons for trees and yellow and blue lightbulbs for porch lights. Among the neighbors are (from left): Third Ward Alderman Chris Jensen (2nd, under American flag), homeowners Alexa and Jason Umbs, (5th and 6th), Mayor Scott Levin (7th) and First Ward Alderman Jennifer Veremis (8th). Behind Veremis is State Representative Deanne Mazzochi, who has already filled two truckloads with donations from constituents. (See inside for a story about a Ukrainian family living in Elmhurst.)
