Addison Trail Theatre invites you to step into a world of lighthearted, whimsical comedy filled with fantasy and love with the school’s spring play, Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Performances will take place at Addison Trail on Thursday, April 7, Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9 at 7 p.m., plus an additional performance at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 9. The show will feature a special surprise – a song for the fairies composed by Addison Trail senior Fernando Padua III, entitled “The Queen’s Lullaby.” Padua plans to pursue a career in music education.

“We hope the audience members enjoy a good laugh when they watch the show,” said Padua (who plays Demetrius) and seniors Neela Lugo and Abigail Ficarra (who play Helena and Hermia, respectively). “When people hear the name Shakespeare, they don’t often think of comedy. But this show is different and is full of magic, fun and fantasy.”

The students added they are thrilled to return to the school’s Blackbox Studio Theatre and perform in the round for the first time in two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Seniors Adam Sakleh, as Nick Bottom, Enzo Ciaccia, as Francis Flute and Cindy Nakhammouane as Snug, said this production has been a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a positive final performance at Addison Trail.

“After seeing the show, we hope people think about what they want in life and remember to love who you want and to be yourself,” said the students.

Director Anna McSweeney said this show is extra special for her, as she performed as Helena during her high school (Lyons Township) production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” McSweeney’s high school Director Bob Cooner even reached out to her to send his well-wishes.

McSweeney said the school hasn’t been able to put on a traditional spring show in two years because of COVID-19, and it has been amazing to watch the students have this experience and bond as a group.

“I like to expose students to Shakespeare and various venue styles, so I’m thrilled to be directing this show,” she said. “A line in the play that best summarizes the story is, ‘… what fools these mortals be!’ That’s what this show is all about – learning to laugh at ourselves.”

Tickets are $7/adults, $5/students. District 88 students with ID and District 88 Gold Card carriers attend free. To buy tickets, go to www.dupage88.net/ATSpringPlayTickets2022.
