Willowbrook’s boys basketball team defeated Proviso East 79-77 in a West Suburban Gold Conference game in Villa Park on Saturday, Feb. 12. The Warriors trailed the visiting Pirates by 12 points at one point in the third quarter. Willowbrook trimmed Proviso East’s lead to 58-57 by the end of the third quarter. The Warriors held a 76-69 lead with 1:25 to play, but the Pirates made a late comeback and had a chance to send the game into overtime with a last-second shot. The shot from the baseline missed. An attempt at a tip-in rolled around the rim but did not fall through the hoop. Willowbrook’s boisterous student section then flooded the court to join the players’ victory celebration. The Warriors improved to 19-9 overall and 9-2 in conference play following their win over the Pirates. Proviso East’s conference record dropped to 9-2. Willowbrook will complete its conference season with this week’s home game against Addison Trail.
