Rams edge the Raiders in a thriller

The Glenbard East girls basketball team faced Glenbard South in an Upstate Eight Conference game in Glen Ellyn on Jan. 7. The Rams trailed Glenbard South 18-12 at halftime, but rallied to take a 24-23 lead by the end of the third quarter. Glenbard East sophomore Gabby Walton (No. 23) is pictured at the free-throw line with the game tied at 33-33 with 1:03 remaining in the fourth quarter. Walton made one of two free throws to give the Rams a 34-33 lead. Sophomore Catey Carney (No. 30) added one more free throw with 11.9 seconds to play to raise the Rams’ lead to 35-33. Walton then stole an inbounds pass in the closing seconds to help Glenbard East secure a 35-33 victory. Carney, who scored 10 of the Rams’ 12 third-quarter points, supplied a team-leading 17 points. Walton, who did not score during the first three quarters, provided 10 of Glenbard East’s 11 points in the fourth quarter. The Rams improved to 8-12 overall and 6-2 in conference play following their victory over Glenbard South.
