Funeral service Thursday
Coach John Englert, 56-year resident of Elmhurst, passed away on November 24, 2021, at the age of 86.
Beloved husband of 15 years to the late Jackie, nee Fults; cherished father of Mark (Mila) and Amy and stepfather to Jim (Carrie) Fults, Dan (Kandice) Fults, and Shane Fults; adored grandfather of eight grandchildren; loving son of the late Philip and the late Edna; caring brother of the late Kathleen.
John served as an altar boy at St. Wenceslaus Church in Iowa City, Ia., where he grew up. He proudly served in the United States Army Reserves for three years before attending the University of Iowa, where he graduated with a degree in Physical Education. While there, he was a member of the I Club, an organization for exemplary athletes. He went on to become a favorite teacher and coach of Elmwood Park High School in Elmwood Park for 34 years.
He was later inducted into the Illinois Coaches Hall of Fame for his outstanding performance as a baseball coach. Along with his teaching and coaching talents, John’s accolades include being a proficient Franklin Insurance Agent and acquiring his master’s degree from Northern Illinois University. After his supposed “retirement,” he continued to work for the Chicago Bears as a spotter on television and radio broadcasts. He greatly enjoyed working at various local golf courses as well, never letting anyone forget his TWO holes-in-one.
Visitation Wednesday, Dec. 1, from 4-8 p.m. at Elmhurst Community Funeral Home – The Ahlgrim Chapel, 567 S. Spring Road, Elmhurst. Family and friends are encouraged to meet at Visitation Catholic Church, 779 S.
