Mary Ann Loewer, a long-time resident of Elmhurst, died peacefully Tuesday, June 15, 2021 after a short illness. Mary Ann was born October 29, 1931 into the Stanley Gwizdalski family of South Chicago and attended local Catholic schools. She worked in her family’s butcher shop and later at the family’s bowling alley, Steel City Lanes. She shared many of her Polish traditions with family and friends. She married William Loewer on October 6, 1965 at St. Bronislava Church. The couple first lived in Oak Park before settling in Elmhurst where they raised a son, Paul, and a daughter, Louise.
She was a graduate of the Northwestern University dental hygiene program and worked many years for Dr. William Maxwell in Chicago. After raising her children, she returned to the profession working for Dr. Nicholas Chipain in Elmhurst until she retired.
Mary Ann and her husband were active parishioners at Visitation Catholic Church. She was a member of the Visitation Ladies Bowling League and continued to bowl until last year. The last several years, she was a volunteer cook for PADS and regularly participated in water aerobics at Courts Plus. To all who knew Mary Ann, her outreach through phone calls and visits brought joy to many.
Mary Ann is survived by her husband and children, daughter-in-law Lori, grandchildren Emily and Nicholas, nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends.
A Funeral Mass was held at Visitation Catholic Church on Saturday, June 19, followed by interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside.
