DAVID C. SCHERTZ
David Charles Schertz, age 89, of Lombard and formerly of Hopedale, IL, peacefully passed away April 1 in his home with family members by his side. He had a heart condition all his life, but we believe in the end he just used it up in the very full life he lived. At his core was a humble, kind, humorous and loving soul from Central Illinois.
A longtime resident of Lombard, Dave taught mathematics to multiple generations of Glenbard East High School students. At First Church of Lombard, he played piano at the Community Table and sang with his wife Doris in the Chancel Choir. He ran many contented miles on the Prairie Path.
God gifted him with many exceptional talents as a piano player, basketball star, runner, and math teacher, but more important is how he used his gifts. He brought great joy to the Illinois State basketball fans in the late 50s and he cared very much about the students he taught. He would always tell us how much it meant to him when one of his former students recognized him at Jewel or out and about. Later in life, his greatest passion was playing the “standards” on piano at several elderly care facilities in the area to brighten up their day.
Like any other Grandfather (of 16), he was more than proud of them and rarely missed a concert, sporting event or other activity.
He was a dear friend to many, a wonderful husband and father, and we are blessed to have had him for 89 years. Or as he said in his ever-humorous way, “Well, I made it to 89 and I think that’s pretty dang good!”
David was the loving husband of Doris Ethel Schertz (nee Garvie); beloved father of the late Larry David, Timothy Alan (Renee Kronon), Robert Darryl (Tina Stevens), Deborah Zelman, Richard Louis (Leah Dail) and David Michael (Casey Dusenbery); cherished son of the late Esther and Louis; adored grandfather of Erica Lindsey, Jamie Schertz, Adrienne Bahner, Natalie Zelman, Danny Schertz, Hudson Schertz, Jonathan Schertz, Chloe Stevens, Sarah Schertz, John Zelman, Alden Schertz, Owen Schertz, Sydney Schertz, Eden Schertz, Jonah Schertz and Andrew Schertz; and great-grandfather of Paige Lindsey.
A Memorial Gathering will be held Saturday, May 8, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard, IL 60148. A private family Memorial Service will be held at the Maple Street Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Dave’s name may be made to The Community Table, c/o First Church of Lombard, 220 S. Main St., Lombard, IL 60148 (https://onrealm.org/firstchurchoflombard/-/give/now); or to the Maple Street Chapel Preservation Society, 220 S Main St., Lombard, IL 60148 (http://maplestreetchapel.org/Donation).

CHUCK VAN DEN EEDEN
Chuck Van Den Eeden, 92 years old and a U.S. Army Veteran having served in the Korean War, of Lombard, passed away April 5, 2021, at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.
Chuck was the beloved husband for 64 years of JoAnn (Feicht) Van Den Eeden; loving father of Carol (Ron) Petersen of Woodridge and Tom Van Den Eeden (Melissa Kotrba) of Rockford; son of the late Joseph H. Van Den Eeden, Sr. and the late Clara (Hamen) Van Den Eeden; brother of Joseph (the late Barbara), and the late Donald (Sharon); uncle of numerous nieces and nephews, and cousin to many.
Chuck had been a resident of Lombard for 63 years. He was born in Chicago, and retired from State Farm Insurance Company—where he was affectionately referred to as Charlie Three Names—after more than 40 years of employment.
