Last week, the Independent reported on a situation that took place on or around the 500 block of Spring Road. Besides a string of eight to 10 squad cars along the street and around the corner, little information was provided about the incident.
It has now been confirmed that at about 6:10 p.m., police were dispatched to the area on the report of a disturbance inside the Spring Inn, which is a liquor establishment. Upon arrival, officers noticed that a front window had been broken.
Shortly after, police received a call about an unconscious individual, at a park approximately one mile south of the Spring Inn. That person was later identified as Karl Bomba, whom officers found unconscious and not breathing. Bomba was immediately transported to a local hospital. The following afternoon, Karl Bomba succumbed to his injury and was pronounced dead at Elmhurst hospital.
The Elmhurst Police Department held an investigation which has so far alleged that an altercation took place outside the bar among Bomba, 55-year-old Ronald Dunbar, of Lombard, and a third individual. The situation turned violent and Dunbar stabbed Bomba once in the chest with a pocketknife.
A short time after the incident, Dunbar voluntarily went to the Elmhurst Police Department to be interviewed. Subsequently, Dunbar was arrested and charged.
Dunbar appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh set bond at $500,000.
Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.
