At 2 p.m., “Mysterious Geodes” Virtual Lecture and Activity will be held at Lizadro Museum of Lapidary Art at 1220 Kensington Rd in Oak Brook. Learn more about the theories on how geodes form and where they are found. This virtual lecture will include a “how to” for cracking your own geodes. Purchase geodes from the Museum Shop online or in store. Live 60-minute program with instructor for ages 6 yrs. to adult. Free program, but limited class size. Sunday, Jan. 24
• There will be a virtual program as part of the Elmhurst History Museum’s new exhibition called, The Great Depression’s Impact on Chicagoland. In early 1929, Chicago and the nation celebrated another prosperous year. Then came Black Thursday on Oct. 24 when a series of further crashes eventually ushered in the Great Depression, ravaging Chicagoans financially in the economic collapse and leaving a lasting imprint on the nation. Dominic A. Pacyga, Ph.D. and Emeritus Professor of History at Columbia College Chicago, presents an illustrated lecture exploring the impact of the Great Depression on the Chicago area. From 7 – 8:30 p.m., the Elmhurst History Museum presents The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl. Read the acclaimed National Book Award-winning book by Timothy Egan that tells the stories of a dozen families during the darkest days of the Depression, then join Elmhurst History Museum staff on Zoom for a lively discussion. First of a four-part series of history-related book discussions to be presented in 2021. Link will be supplied to participants the week of the program. Appropriate for adults. • Now through Feb. 14, 2021, the Elmhurst Art Museum presents a socially-distanced self-guided, outdoor walking tour of Elmhurst’s modern architecture. Purchase admission ticket at the web site, however, admission is free during Wright Before the “Lloyd” exhibition currently on display through Feb. 14. – Wright Before the “Lloyd,” open now through February 14, 2021, features images and artifacts that portray the eclectic, early explorations of one of the world’s greatest architects and is curated by Chicago’s official cultural historian Tim Samuelson.
Lizzadro Museum
Now through January 2021, a Special Exhibit is on display called “Re-carving the Past: The Art of Chinese Bronze and Jades.” The exhibition features 11 bronzes from the MacLean Collection and 16 Jade carvings from the Lizzadro Museum illustrating the enduring importance of antiquity in Chinese art and culture. Formerly located in Wilder Park, the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art can now be found at 1220 Kensington Road in Oak Brook.
