Lombard/Villa Park obituaries—December 3

LOIS A. BACHELOR
Lois Ardelle (Koplin) Bachelor, 89, of Belvidere, made her peaceful transition Saturday, November 14, at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. She was born in the back bedroom of her grandparents’ home in Chicago on March 19, 1931, to Henry Myron Koplin and Alberta Jeanette (Smith) Koplin. She met her husband, Paul Edwin Bachelor, as a child, as their fathers were friends. They married June 25, 1955 in Cicero, and enjoyed nearly 60 years together until he passed in 2015.
She was raised and lived in Chicago, moved to Lombard for 35 years (1968-2004), then moved to Belvidere, where she has lived for 16 years. She and Paul also enjoyed being snowbirds in Harlingen, Texas, for several years and traveling the country with their Hi-Lo Trailer Club.
Lois was always a strong, independent woman who instilled these attributes in each of their children. She started by giving us unique names, and then nurturing our unique gifts. As a teenager, she worked at Stebbins Hardware in Chicago to support her horse (Major Jim) that was stabled in Lincoln Park, and competed in horse shows, winning many ribbons. She also worked for Playboy magazine, was a Tupperware dealer for many years, and finally retired from ServiceMaster in 1993, where she was a payroll clerk for 10 years.
She was a charter member of the DuPage Church of Religious Science, founded in 1976, and lived its principles every day, enhancing the lives of all those who were fortunate enough to know her. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kirsten Bachelor and David Elliott of Villa Park, sons and daughters-in-law Brad and Kim Bachelor of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and Phil and Carol Bachelor of Chicago; grandchildren Vince (Marcy), Steve (Nicole), Lauren, Amy, Brooke and Colin; and great-grandchildren Bradley, Connor, Caleigh and Mathew.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister Marjorie Ahlgren (2012), brother Richard (2008), infant sister Margaret (1925) and brother-in-law Charles “Jim” Bachelor (1945).
She faced several health challenges over the years including St. Vitus’ Dance, a broken hip, a stroke and several falls, but was amazingly resilient. Despite these setbacks, she was always positive, setting an example as she persisted, recovered and thrived, living independently until the end. She had a truly amazing, long life, and we will be forever grateful that we chose her as our mother.
There will be a private celebration of her life in the coming months. In accordance with her wishes, her physical body will be donated to science and later cremated. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Boone County Council on Aging, 2141 Henry Luckow Lane, Belvidere, IL 61008.
