The Elmhurst Independent has brought back the Community Calendar to keep its readers up with what is going on around town. Upcoming events will be published, even if they are virtual and only available online. Please remember to be safe when attending live events by wearing masks, using hand sanitizer and maintaining the proper social distance.

Friday, Oct. 23

• Edgar Allen Poe: Spooky Stories from the Schoolhouse

will take place virtually to those who visit elmhursthistory.org, click on Programs to find the link to view the pre-recorded program. Gather your fearless friends and tune in online as EHM staff members tap into creepy classics like “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Raven,” and more.: Approx. 30 minutes. Program available through Nov. 30.

• At 7 p.m. and continuing through Nov. 6, the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra will present ‘Heavenly Harp & Beautiful Brass:  A French Connection’ featuring ESO Principal Harp Janelle Lake,  as the first of two virtual fall musical programs. The City has officially declared Oct. 24 Frank Lloyd Wright Day in Elmhurst and guests are invited to the Elmhurst Art Museum and the Elmhurst History Museum, which both have exhibitions to encourage residents and out-of-town visitors to learn more about the architect. Saturday, Oct. 24

Lizzadro Museum presents Asian Art curator Dr. Tongyun Yin as she explores the Lizzadro Collection. Topics include Buddhist art, foreign influences, longevity, and symbolism. Physical distance and masks required.

Friday, Oct. 30

From 7 to 10 p.m., the American Legion is hosting the Inaugural “2020 Nashville Songwriter Fundraiser” at the post home at 310 W. Butterfield Rd. Enjoy music from songwriters Steve Bogard and Jason Sever, who have written songs for Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw, George Strait and others. Tickets are $125 for indoor seating, $75 for outdoor seating. Beer and wine included. Food and full bar available a la carte. Sponsorship opportunities available. The Elmhurst History Museum presents “Frank Lloyd Wright and the Architecture of Space.” From Unity Temple to the Guggenheim Museum, the dynamic interior spaces of Wright’s buildings were integrally tied to the overall forms of these structures. John H. Waters, preservation programs manager at the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy, will share images and insights into the spaces that Wright created and discuss the importance of preserving his buildings for future generations. Thursday, Nov. 5

The York Distinguished Alumni Program (YDAP) has announced that five Dukes of Distinction have been chosen by a panel of York alumni judges and will be honored via a virtual ceremony. They are Jillian Arnold (2000), Manu Edakara (2010), Larry Larkin (1955), Kenneth Moy  (1951), and Martha Garman VanGeem (1972). The program will be available to watch at elmhurst205.org. (Time TBA)

Saturday, Nov. 14

From 7-8:30 p.m., the Elmhurst Center for Performing Arts (ECPA) will hold its 5th annual Spotlight Gala, held virtually for the first time ever. Performers include Elmhurst resident Cathy Richardson of Jefferson Starship and Dan Konopka of OK GO. Guests are invited to order an “Experience Box for Two” for $175 with everything provided to enjoy the virtual event at home. Only 100 boxes will be available so order early at ECPA-Elmhurst.org/Gala2020.

• Now through Nov. 9, Edward-Elmhurst Health presents the Healthy Driven Take a Hike! Challenge, which will feature weekly hiking challenges and tips. At the web site, eehealth.org/healthy-driven/take-a-hike/, you’ll find an interactive map highlighting popular trails in the western suburbs. Participants are invited to post photos from their hikes on Facebook or Instagram (posting instructions provided on the landing page) to be entered into a weekly raffle for outdoor games.

• Now through Feb. 14, 2021, the Elmhurst Art Museum presents a socially-distanced self-guided, outdoor walking tour of Elmhurst’s modern architecture. Purchase admission ticket at the web site, however, admission is free during Wright Before the “Lloyd” exhibition currently on display through Feb. 14. Pre-recorded audio insights by architect Robert Bunda provide historic context and fun facts about architectural gems by Wright, Mies van der Rohe, Walter Burley Griffin, and other greats. – Wright Before the “Lloyd,” open now through February 14, 2021, features images and artifacts that portray the eclectic, early explorations of one of the world’s greatest architects and is curated by Chicago’s official cultural historian Tim Samuelson.

– Art in the Post, open now through Nov. 22, displays postcard artwork created and submitted by community members reflecting on COVID-19, racial injustices and other current events

Frank Lloyd Wright: Architecture of the Interior

Now through Dec. 20.

Frank Lloyd Wright believed in organic design that unified every feature of the house to express a single vision down to the smallest details. Through reproduction drawings, house plans, and photographs, explore the ingenious ways in which Wright maximized the feeling of open space while still accommodating the various functions of daily living. A national touring exhibition from International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC. Limit: 5 people per group, 15 visitors per hour. All visitors are required to wear face masks for entry.

Lizzadro Museum

Now until January 2021, a Special Exhibit is on display called “Re-carving the Past: The Art of Chinese Bronze and Jades,” focusing on the shapes and decorations of the two most prominent art forms in China. The exhibition features 11 bronzes from the MacLean Collection and 16 Jade carvings from the Lizzadro Museum illustrating the enduring importance of antiquity in Chinese art and culture. Formerly located in Wilder Park, the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art can now be found at 1220 Kensington Road in Oak Brook.
