Police Reports

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations. Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass

July 7

A reporting officer responded to the 400 block of W. Butterfield at around 6:17 p.m. for a report of criminal damage to property. Upon arrival, the victim relayed that unknown person(s) had knocked down a caution sign that he installed in the alley behind his home.

July 5

Police said that subsequent to a commercial burglar alarm at a car dealership in the 700 block of W. Lake at around 4:46 a.m., officers found two broken glass panels on the north side of the building. The interior of the building was checked and no signs of further criminal activity were noted.

July 1-July 2

A victim in the 400 block of S. Arlington advised that an unknown suspect used a large boulder to smash the driver’s side window of his vehicle sometime between the above dates. Nothing appeared to be missing. A matter of record.

July 2

A reporting officer responded to the 200 block of Melrose at around 8 a.m. for a report of an attempted burglary to a vehicle. The victim stated an unknown suspect(s) threw bricks at her vehicle’s passenger side window and door. No entry was gained to the vehicle.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, damage to property, disturbance

July 4

A 28-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 200 block of E. First at around 8:31 a.m. A victim told police the suspect forced her into his pickup truck and drove her back home. While driving home, an argument ensued and the suspect began punching the victim and pulling her hair, according to police.

A 49-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery, interfering with the reporting of domestic violence and attempted unlawful restraint in the 700 block of S. Colfax at around 9:58 a.m. A victim told police that during an argument, the suspect threw food at her and stuck her in the face causing an injury. The suspect then reportedly grabbed her cell phone to prevent her from calling the police.

July 2

A victim in the 700 block of S. Hawthorne told police at around 9:07 p.m. that a suspect slammed a door into his arm causing a small abrasion just above his right elbow. The suspect denied ever making physical contact with the victim. No arrests were made due to conflicting statements from both parties.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol, possession of alcohol

July 6

Nicholas Garrett, 25, of Wheaton, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a hypodermic syringe and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a solicitor complaint in the 600 block of W. St. Charles at around 6:33 a.m. Police said Garrett also was discovered to have four active warrants out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

July 5

Police said that subsequent to a motorcycle crash in the 500 block of W. Third at around 5:32 p.m., the suspect was found to be driving while under the influence of alcohol. Upon further investigation it was found the suspect was under the age of 21 and was transported to Elmhurst Hospital. Charges are pending discharge from the hospital.

July 4

Nicole Robinson, 41, of Des Plaines, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and unsafe tires subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Clinton at around 12:10 a.m.

July 3

Alexsander Diaz, 18, of Lombard, was charged with zero tolerance-minor with a BAC greater than .00, consumption of alcohol by a minor, illegal transportation of alcohol, consumption of alcohol by a minor, possession of adult use cannabis by a driver and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Indiana at around 2:35 a.m. Michael Soto-Leija, 18, of Joliet, a passenger in the vehicle, was charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor, transportation of open alcohol and possession of adult use cannabis.

Entering unlocked vehicles and garages

July 1-July 2

Two incidents of unknown suspects entering unlocked vehicles or garages were reported in the 400 block of S. Kenilworth and in the 200 block of N. Myrtle.

Harassment, threats

June 26

A victim told police at around 11:28 a.m. that the suspect asked her to send him explicit photos of herself. The victim declined to send any photos. Officers spoke to the victim’s parents who related that they handled the situation with the other parents and they did not wish to pursue charges.

Obstruction

July 2

Santos Alonso, 22, of Stone Park, was charged with obstructing identification, resisting arrest, illegal transportation of alcohol, aggravated driving while license revoked, improper lighting, improper use of registration, unlawful use of an electronic communication device and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Church and Fischer Farm Road at around 8:03 p.m. Police said Yelin Munoz, 21, of Stone Park, a passenger in the vehicle, was found to have a valid arrest warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

July 5

Leroy Jefferson Jr., 26, of Bellwood, was issued citations for illegal transportation of adult use cannabis, illegal transportation of open alcohol, possession of fireworks and driving without lights near I-290 and Lake at around 2:45 a.m.

July 3

Jerry Williams, 66, of Peoria, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, DUI-drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a report of a driver slumped at the wheel in the 200 block of N. York at around 8:14 p.m. James Clevenger, 47, of Peoria, a passenger in the vehicle, was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Suspicious circumstances

July 8

A victim in the 500 block of Van Auken told police at around 4:59 p.m. that after hearing a car door slam, he observed a suspect carrying the victim’s flag from his yard. After checking the area, an officer located the flag. The flag was returned to the victim.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/deceptive practice/obstruction/robbery

July 8

Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of W. North at around 8:10 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) used her personal information to fill a fraudulent prescription at the CVS pharmacy. The victim cancelled the prescription and told the pharmacist that she never requested a prescription. The reporting officer provided the victim with information on how to protect herself against identity theft.

July 7

Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of Berkley at around 8:19 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) fraudulently used his personal information to apply for unemployment benefits. He has not experienced a monetary loss regarding this incident. The officer provided the victim with information on how to protect himself against identity theft.

May 28-July 7

Attempted theft by deception was reported in the 900 block of Virginia Lane. A complainant told police that he applied online for a position with the company he believed to be UNICEF. He received an email stating if he wanted the position, they would send him a check for $2,850.45. He was instructed to deposit the check into his bank account and to await instructions on where to send some of the money. He attempted to deposit the check and learned the check was fraudulent. The complainant has not lost any money.

July 6

Pawel Surowiec, 34, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft and resisting a police officer at a store in the 100 block of W. North at around 11:40 p.m. A reporting officer made contact with the complainant who stated that Surowiec was attempting to steal items from the store, police said. Upon attempting to place Surowiec under arrest, he began to allegedly resist officers.

Theft was reported at a gas station in the 1000 block of N. York at around 6:19 a.m. A reporting officer spoke with a store manager who reported an unknown suspect contacted an employee via telephone and was able to convince the employee to transfer $1,400 of the store’s money via Western Union.

Burglary was reported in the 200 block of Illinois at around 7:25 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect entered his unlocked garage and removed several pieces of gardening equipment.

July 4

Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of S. Arlington at around 12:30 p.m. A victim told police that he gave remote access to a tech support representative in order to assist with installing a printer. The victim stated he later began receiving multiple phone calls from an unknown suspect who stated he had hacked into his laptop and he would need to pay $300 to relinquish access. The victim realized he was the victim of identity theft and subsequently cancelled all his credit cards and froze his checking account.

July 2

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 300 block of Boyd at around 6:01 p.m. A victim told police that she left her overhead garage door open overnight and her vehicle inside was unlocked. Her neighbor’s Ring camera captured the suspect vehicle stop

in front of the victim’s home. The video showed the suspect exiting the passenger side of the suspect vehicle and entering the victim’s garage. The victim stated her vehicle was rifled through, but she was not missing anything from inside of the vehicle or the garage.

July 1-July 2

Deceptive practice was reported in the 1000 block of Riverside. A victim told police he purchased an item from a seller using an on-line payment app. After making the payment the victim never received the item and was blocked from contacting the seller.

June 30

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 200 block of E. Third at around 1 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect entered his unlocked vehicle and stole his iPhone.

June 28-July 4

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 500 block of N. Adele. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) entered her vehicle and removed a jacket sometime between the above dates.

July 2

Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of N. Larch at around 12:43 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) filed for unemployment benefits using his personal information. The victim will contact Illinois Department of Employment Services to report the fraud.

July 1-July 2

A vehicle in the 100 block of E. Orchard as reported stolen between the above dates. Police said a reporting officer responded to the above location for a report of an attempted burglary to a vehicle. Upon further investigation it was discovered the vehicle was not in the driveway and appeared to have be stolen.

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 200 block of N. Myrtle. According to police, a reporting officer responded to the above location to return a wallet that had been found in front of someone’s residence. Upon further investigation, it was learned the victim’s unlocked vehicle was burglarized and two wallets were taken. The wallets were returned to the victim who advised cash were missing from each wallet.

Attempted burglary was reported in the 200 block of E. Gladys. A victim told police that an unknown suspect forced entry to her garage and entered her vehicle. Nothing appeared to be missing.

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 500 block of N. Emory. A victim told police that an unknown suspect entered her unlocked vehicle and removed a pair of sunglasses valued at $400.

July 1

Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of N. Willow at around 10:03 a.m. A reporting officer spoke with a victim who stated he received an email advising him of fraudulent activity on his bank account.

June 21

Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of E. Ridge at around 7:20 a.m. A victim told police his personal information was used to apply for unemployment benefits. The victim was advised to contact the State of Illinois to dispute the fraudulent claim.

June 20-July 1

Theft was reported in the 100 block of E. Grantley. A victim told police that an unknown suspect took cash from envelopes in a filing cabinet sometime between the above dates. This case is pending investigation.

June 15-June 24

Forgery was reported at a business in the 400 block of W. Wrightwood between the above dates. A complainant told police that he received several counterfeit checks as payment for several orders. Suspect 1 made two orders and Suspect 2 made three orders. All orders were for computer equipment and delivered to vacant businesses in Florida.

Unlawful use of a weapon

July 5

Richard Jordan, 35, of Chicago, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, possession of cannabis and speeding near Roosevelt and Route 83 at around 10:37 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Jordan was found to be in possession of an unloaded pistol, brass knuckles and cannabis.

Warrant arrest

Police said Paul M. Cirone, 58, of Elmhurst, was found to have two valid warrants from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office in the 400 block of Evergreen at around 12:32 p.m.
