School districts provide food service

District 88 is teaming up with other area school districts, including District 45 and Salt Creek School District 48, to provide meals to students while schools are closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. From March 17-20, about 140 volunteers prepared and distributed thousands of meals to students. Each day, from 10 a.m. until noon, breakfast and lunches were provided free of charge to all residents up to the age of 18. The meals were distributed outside of several schools, including Willowbrook High School and District 45’s Jefferson Middle School. Cottage Hill Operating Company helped to deliver the food to the schools. The program is continuing each day from March 23-27. One photo, from March 20, shows (left to right) Cathy Bles of Cottage Hill and Willowbrook High School English teacher Daniel Fliegel distributing meals outside of Willowbrook’s main entrance. Volunteers distributed about 50 breakfasts and about 50 lunches at Willowbrook on March 20. Volunteers at Jefferson Middle School helped to provide more than 60 breakfasts and over 60 lunches on that same day. The photo from Jefferson shows (front, middle) Isela Aquino—assistant to Willowbrook Principal Dan Krause—and (back row, left to right) Cottage Hill’s Barbara Huff, Marcia Ivancevic—assistant to Willowbrook assistant principal Bob Daly—and Donna O’Neill—assistant to Willowbrook athletic director Brandon Murphy.
