Pick of the Week – The Elmhurst event NOT to be missed!

Thursday, Jan. 30 

From 7-8 p.m., the Elmhurst Youth Commission and Thrive D205 invites parents and teens to a program entitled, “Legal Marijuana: What Does It Mean for Teens,” in the large meeting room at Elmhurst Public Library. The speaker will be Matthew Quinn, LCPC will present the changing landscape of marijuana and vaping use and legislation in Illinois. Free and open to the public.

Monday, Feb. 3 

• Beginning at 11:30 p.m. the Elmhurst Garden Club will meet at Wilder Mansion. Following a luncheon and a meeting, the program will begin at 1 p.m. It will be “Critters in Your Garden,” presented by Mel Zaloudek. The program is open to the public.

• 100+ Women Who Care – Elmhurst will hold its quarterly meeting at 7 p.m. at Angelo’s Ristorante, 247 N. Tuesday, Feb. 4

From 6 – 8 p.m., the public is invited to attend the 18th Annual Summer Recreation Open House, a free, one-stop shop summer learning, athletic, and enrichment registration opportunity. All Elmhurst families and neighboring communities are invited. Browse tables for various summer activities and camps for all ages and abilities. Thursday, Feb. 6 

Beginning at 6 p.m., the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation’s 20th annual Chef Fest will be held at Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace. A cash bar reception will be held from 6-7 p.m. followed by food tasting from 7-9 p.m. The event includes a variety of signature menu items produced by chefs from prominent local restaurants, bakeries and caterers. Saturday, Feb. 8 

• At 10:30 a.m., Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, now located at 1220 Kensington Road in Oak Brook, offers “Start Your Rockin’ Collection” for youth 5 to 10 years of age. Create your personalized rock collection. Bring our own egg carton to repurpose into a collection box. Decoration materials are provided. Each child can choose several rocks, minerals and fossils to start or fill in their collection carton. Rocks from home can also be brought in for identification. Adult supervision is required. $15 per person. Reservations required. Call 630-833-1616 

• At 1:30 p.m., ages 8 to 16 are invited to Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, now located at 1220 Kensington Road in Oak Brook, for “Rockin’ Jewelry for Kids.” Children can make their own gemstone jewelry to keep. Choose two different types of jewelry to make with stones from the Museum Shop and learn how to work with jeweler’s tools. Completes Girl Scout Jeweler’s badge. Adult supervision is required. • From 6-11 p.m., the District 205 Foundation for Excellence in Education is hosting the 2020 Within Reach Gala at Medinah Country Club. Funds will support various education initiatives by the Foundation. Golden Raffle tickets will be sold prior to the event. They are $100 each, but only 200 will be sold. The evening includes open bar, a plated dinner, raffles and games, online and live auctions. The “Friend of the Foundation” award will be presented. Wednesday, Feb. 12

From 7-8:30 p.m., the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will host “Solving Climate Change – A Solution We Can All Like” presented by Citizens’ Climate Education and Citizens’ Climate Lobby at Elmhurst Public Library. Learn about one simple comprehensive Climate Solution that is rapidly growing in public and bi-partisan support, endorsed by 27 Nobel economics laureates, considered as a fair and just and effective climate policy and provides for economic growth and jobs. NOTE:  Not a Library-sponsored program. Free and open to the public.

Wednesday, Feb. 19

Beginning at 4 p.m., Elmhurst College will screen the documentary “The Area,” this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. intercultural presen-tation. in the Schaible Sci-ence Center, Illinois Hall on the campus of Elmhurst Col-lege. Sunday, March 1

From 8 a.m. to 12 noon, local Scouts BSA Troop 82 is hosting a pancake breakfast fundraiser at the American Legion T.H.B. Post #187, 310 W. Butterfield Road in Elmhurst. The menu will include pancakes, sausage links, coffee and orange juice.

Proceeds will help underwrite the Troop’s scouting program which includes monthly campouts and high-adventure experiences. Tickets are $5 in advance of March 1 or $6 at the door.  Children 5 and younger are free. Tickets can be purchased at troop82elmhurst.org.

Ongoing programs:

• Widows or Widowers (WOW) meet every third Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 537 S. York Road. Admission: $5 per person includes live entertainment. Info: Dave at 630-620-4060 or visit WOW.cfsites.org.

• The Elmhurst American Legion, T.H.B. Post No. 187, hosts a fish fry every Friday night from 6-8:30 p.m. Live musical entertainment every Friday evening. Karaoke on the second Friday of each month.  Bingo on Wednesdays, starting with Early Birds at 6:45 p.m.  Info: 630-833-7800.
