Free holiday movie

‘The Polar Express’

At 9:30 a.m., York Theatre will present a free holiday movie “The Polar Express.” Doors open at 9 a.m. and there will be free conductor hats for all the kids, while supplies last. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., head across the street to City Centre Fountain Plaza, where Santa will appear.

Saturday, Dec. 14

  • From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Spring Road will host its Sleigh Rides & Ice Sculptures event. There will be old-fashioned sleigh rides (or wagon rides, in the event of no snow), as well as hot chocolate and cookies. Santa will also be on hand at the Gazebo. Info: springroad.com.
  • From 1-4 p.m., join Family Holiday celebration at the McCormick House at the Elmhurst Art Museum. Enjoy hot cocoa, cookies, hands-on activities. Santa will visit beginning at 2 p.m. Free with museum admission. Kids are always free.
  • Beginning at 1:30 p.m., young people ages 8-16 are invited to Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, 1220 Kensington Road in Oak Brook, for Rockin’ Jewelry for Kids. Children can make their own gemstone jewelry to keep. Choose two different types of jewelry to make with stones from the Museum Shop and learn how to work with jeweler’s tools. Sunday, Dec. 15

  • At 12:15 p.m., the Single Mothers Support Group will meet at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 W. Brush Hill Rd. Enjoy a Christmas dinner with your children, a sing-along and gift exchange. Free child care will start at 1 p.m. for infants through age 12, while mothers enjoy a devotional led by Caryn Rivadeneria, author and Director of Care at ECRC. Free, no registration needed.   • At 3 p.m. in Hammerschmidt Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College, the Elmhurst Choral Union and Orchestra present “The Mu-sic of Christmas.” Features Vivaldi’s Gloria, a jazz-influenced mix of carols, music from the movie “Home Alone,” and a carol sing-along. A pre-concert lecture by composer David DeVasto begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults, $23 for seniors and $10 for youth ages 7-22. Saturday, Jan. 4

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., ages 5-adult are invited to Lizzadro Museum, 1220 Kensington Rd. Oak Brook, for Dinosaur Day, held annually on the first Saturday of the new year at Lizzadro. Drop in at the Museum and learn more about fossils with hands-on activities. See and touch real fossils, put together 3-D puzzles of dinosaur bones and make your own fossil imprint to take home. A drop-in game with prizes will be offered throughout the day with fossil prizes to take home. $8 per person, museum members free. No reservations required. Saturday, Jan. 11

At 2 p.m., the Elmhurst History Museum presents Train Songs of America with

folk musician Dean Milano, who will bring an engaging musical program of train-themed songs from America’s past—both well-known favorites and a few obscure selections as well. The program includes a slideshow featuring photos and artwork of trains throughout history. Program takes place in the Education Center, 120 E. Sunday, Jan. 26

At 2 p.m., the Elmhurst History Museum presents Chicagoland: City and Suburbs of the Railroad Age. Join Dr. Ann Durkin Keating, Professor of History at North Central College, as she discusses the influence of the railroad in the 19th century in northeastern Illinois through a slide lecture. Dr. Keating is an accomplished author of many publications and she is co-editor of the Encyclopedia of Chicago. Program takes place in the Education Center and registration is required. Ongoing programs:
