SALLY ELIZABETH BAUER
Sally Elizabeth Bauer, 92, passed on July 20, 2019, at the Rosewood Care Center in St. Charles. She was born October 21, 1926 in Whiting, Indiana.
Preceded in death by her father Brice Voight, mother Julia Nagy Voight, brother John Voight, brother Brice Voight, husband Donald Bauer, son Ross Bauer, son Brian Bauer, nephew Vaniel Blair, and niece Gerry Kamin.
Survived by her daughter Ellen (Dudley) Sidwell of St. Charles, son Glen Bauer of Bancroft, Wisconsin; grandchildren Kimberly (Scott Briggs) Bauer of Bellingham, Washington, Christina (Gavin) Hayes of Geneva, Brian (Nancy) Bauer of St. Charles, Joetta Bauer of Bartlett, Mandy Sidwell of Gardnerville, Nevada; and five great grandchildren Jordan, Eli, Sylvia, Aubrey and Annabelle.
Though she was always called Sally, she was born Sarah Elizabeth Voight. At 16, when she needed her birth certificate for her first job, she discovered her birth name was not Sally. After high school, she married Donald Ross Bauer on May 18, 1946. They built a house in Highland, Indiana, where they raised their four kids until they moved to Lombard in 1958. There, they managed a local bowling alley before Don began work installing industrial freezers. During those years, Sally worked for a blind dentist managing his dental supply business. She also worked in the office of the First Church of Lombard. The family was very active in Boy Scouting, with Sally being a den mother for many years and organizing Blue and Gold Banquets. Sally loved handcrafts, making many beaded ornaments and afghans that family members treasure. She was an active member of the Homemakers organization. One of Sally’s favorite hobbies was gardening and she was especially proud of her vegetable garden. She and Don were very good at growing squash and gave away much of their crop every year. She was an avid Scrabble player and loved the Tribune crossword puzzles. Her favorite TV shows were the Hallmark Channel movies and the old Western Channel reruns.
Sally also loved cooking for her family. During the lean years raising four small children, she became very good at stretching a dollar making many pasta dishes. A family favorite was her goulash! Nothing made her happier than feeding her family, especially when grandchildren and great-grandchildren arrived. She loved them all dearly. In 2012, after moving from the Lombard house to an assisted living facility in South Elgin, nothing pleased her more than a surprise visit from the kids arriving with a Dairy Queen treat.
She leaves behind a family who loves the memories of large family gatherings with tables full of lovingly prepared food. Her many handcrafts are proudly displayed in their homes.
The family has planned a private family memorial gathering and hopes old neighbors and friends will fondly remember Sally and her generous ways.
