Builders Club in York Center
Participants ages 6-10 will be working with many different materials including wood, PVC, and cardboard to create. Projects include making a birdhouse, creating a marshmallow launcher and a popsicle stick bridge, plus other smaller projects. Participants will work individually and in groups. Participants will have opportunities to work individually and with new friends in groups. Dates: Wednesdays, May 8-22. Time: 4:45-5:45 p.m. Fee: $16/resident; $20/non-resident. Location: YCPD Museum. Join the Villa Park Library Cookbook Club
The Friends of the Villa Park Library invite all foodies to join their Cookbook Club. Each month features a new cookbook. Members can check out a copy of the book at the library and explore the recipes at their own pace. Then they will prepare their favorite recipe to share with the group, try other dishes, and participate in a lively discussion. Meetings will take place on Thursdays at The Depot at Cortesi Park (320 E. Kenilworth Ave.) on May 2, July 9, and Aug. 1 from 7:30–8:45 p.m. and on June 6 from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Participants can attend any or all sessions. Registration is required for each session. First Church of Lombard Rummage Sale April 26-27
First Church of Lombard, 220 S. Main St., is holding a rummage sale Friday, April 26, from 4-7 p.m., and Saturday, April 27, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., with most items half price on Saturday. There will be clothing, toys, housewares, jewelry, linens, books, movies, seasonal and more. Sponsored by the Women’s Fellowship.

New exhibit at DuPage County Historical Museum
“Read All About It! Newspapers & Journalism in DuPage County” opens April 27 at the DuPage County Historical Museum, 102 E. Wesley St., Wheaton, and runs until Jan. 26, 2020. Glenbard South presents ‘Figments’
Glenbard South High School will present “Figments,” a farcical comedy by Billy St. John, at 7:30 p.m. April 25, 26 and 27 in the Glenbard South Theatre, 23W200 Butterfield Road in Glen Ellyn. Writer’s block, love triangles, overbearing mothers and cremated fathers, an average afternoon in the life of Rick Jacobs, a playwright just searching for a break professionally and romantically. Good Neighbor Award
The office of state Rep. Terra Costa Howard is launching the Good Neighbor Business of the Month Award to spotlight companies that do an exceptional job of supporting local charities and service organizations. Each month, a Good Neighbor Business certificate will be to a local business that has made a significant contribution, through donations or volunteer commitments. The award will be based on nominations from community members. You can submit your nominations by [email protected]. Include the business name and address, plus some examples of the support they provide to charitable organizations in the area. Nominations will be accepted on a continuing basis.

Swim team registration open in Villa Park
Villa Park Parks and Recreation is holding Open Registration for the Mariners Swim Team. The season includes eleven meets, five on Wednesday evenings and five on Saturday mornings, with a season ending conference meet. Practices are each weekday morning at Jefferson Pool and swimmers are expected to attend each practice. It is recommended that beginning swimmers have previous swim team experience prior to the start of the season. Swimmers must successfully swim one length of the pool using a legal stroke in order to participate. Younger swimmers, ages 5-8, can participate as a Mini Mariner and compete in the five home meets. Registration fees are $119 per child; $109 additional children and $85 for Mini Mariners.

Rummage Sale at Methodist church April 26-27
The First United Methodist Church of Lombard, 155 S. Main St., Lombard, is having a rummage sale to benefit the United Methodist Women’s missions, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Special “Fill a Bag” pricing on Saturday.

‘Spring clean-up’ in Lombard
Come out, walk around and join your local Lombard Town Centre businesses for the first-ever Spring Cleanup Sales Event Thursday, April 25, to Sunday, April 28. Participating businesses will place a broom out in front of their store to let you know they have a special just for you. Stop in and see what they have for you: discounts, free stuff, coupons and treats. Greene Valley Scenic Overlook opens May 4
The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s scenic overlook at Greene Valley Forest Preserve in Naperville opens on weekends starting May 4, providing a birds-eye view of DuPage County and see the Chicago skyline from 190 feet above the ground. The overlook will be open Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Oct. 27, weather permitting, although Illinois Environmental Protection Agency activities may cause it to close without notice. NAACP gala April 28
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), DuPage County Branch, will hold its
62nd annual Gala will be held on Sunday, April 28, at Bobak’s Signature Events, 6440 Double Eagle Drive, in Woodridge from 6-9:30 p.m. Tickets are $45 for those 18 years of age and under, and $75 for adults. A portion of all contributions goes to fund scholarships to deserving students, and also funds other branch initiatives. The theme this year is “Building Bridges,” which represents the NAACP’s resolve to unite the community, government and business for the good of all citizens. Trout Fishing Derby May 4 in York Center
So you think you can fish? Well then this event is for you. All participants will have two-and-a-half hours to catch as many fish as they can at Knolls Park, 1502 S. Meyers Road. Prizes are then awarded in a variety of categories like heaviest fish caught, smallest fish caught, and most fish caught in all age categories. All fishermen are required to register before the deadline, as registration will not take place at the event. Auditions for ‘Seussical’
Auditions are open to the public ages 9 and over for “Seussical” and will be held from 7-10 p.m. on May 14 and 15, at The Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way in Elgin. Callbacks will be by invitation only from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 18. Lombard Senior Men’s Club to meet May 7

Library fundraiser May 3
The Friends of the Villa Park Library will hold their next dine-out fundraiser on Friday, May 3, from 5–10 p.m. at Jason’s Deli (2060 York Rd, Oak Brook, IL 60532). Customers bring in a printed flier or show the flier to the cashier on their smart phones and Jason’s Deli will give back 15 percent of the proceeds from this date and time to the Friends. Customers may also opt to get their food delivered through Doordash.com by mentioning the fundraiser in their order. Money received will help the Friends support various programs and services at the Villa Park Public Library. Fliers are available on the library’s website or at one of the service desks. Garden plots available in Villa Park
Villa Park’s Community Garden plots are available now purchase for the season. Anyone who has a green thumb or wants to try their hand at gardening is welcome to purchase a plot. Garden Plots will be available for planting starting mid-May and the complete fall clean-up needs to be done by Oct. 31.The Garden Plots and are located at Westmore Park (between Westmore and Biermann off of Plymouth). The fee to reserve a 10’ x 10’ plot is just $10. Plots are sold on a first-come, first -served basis at the Iowa Community Center, 338 N. Iowa. Call 630-834-8970 with any questions.
