The York girls gymnastics team took second at the regional level this year and was third in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division.
Lailah Waddell earned all-WSC Silver honors on vault, while Angelina Deblasio was all-conference on vault.
Coach Anthony Colant also had high praise for the performances of sectional qualifiers Sydney Hill and Olivia Romano. “Sydney stepped it up on bars, nearly hitting the routine of her career to qualify for state, making a slight mistake on her free hip, but nailing the harder parts of her routine,” he noted. “Olivia hit a beautiful beam routine that maximized her score and passed her through to sectionals for her first time.”
Overall, Colant was more than pleased with the progress the program made this season.
“This season was another step on our path,” said Colant. “The progress we made this year should finalize everything we’ve been trying to push within the program to cement a stable foundation for successful athletes in the years to come. I’m expecting great things from the team next year.”
Waddell also qualified for sectionals on vault and Zikora Nnam qualified on beam, while Maryalice Shockey made it to sectionals in the all-around. York scored a 135.775 at the regional. Deblasio also advanced on vault, as did Waddell. Martha Miklyukh advanced to sectionals on bars, as did Shockey and Rachel Lawson. Waddell qualified in floor exercise along with Megan Cronin.
