The York boys basketball team wrapped up its regular season with a flurry of recent activity.
The Dukes lost to Proviso West 63-52 in a conference game that needed two overtimes to reach a decision.
York trailed 9-6 after the first quarter and led 20-19 at halftime. Proviso outscored York 5-2 in a point-starved third quarter, but the Dukes outscored the hosts 11-9 in the fourth to force extra sessions. After playing to a 9-9 stalemate in the first overtime, Proviso outscored York 21-10 in the second overtime.
Nick Kosich led the Dukes with 19 points. Angelo Martucci had nine points, while Nate Shockey had eight points. Erik Cohn and Sam Walsh each had six points. York shot only 29.3 percent from the field. Kosich had three 3-pointers. Walsh had seven rebounds, while Cohn had five. Martucci had three assists, while Kosich had four of the team’s seven steals.
York also dropped a 62-51 WSC Silver game to Oak Park-River Forest. York led 14-12 after one, but trailed 32-28 at halftime. Oak Park-River Forest outscored York 15-9 in the third quarter and 15-14 in the fourth.
Martucci led York with 10 points, while John Milling and Jeff Grace each tallied nine points. Cohn had seven points. Walsh pulled in five rebounds, while Shockey had three assists. Martucci and Shockey each had three steals. York shot 48.7 percent from the field.
In a 49-37 WSC Silver win against Lyons Township, York led 16-9 after the first quarter and 23-20 at halftime. York used a 12-8 third quarter and a 14-9 fourth-quarter advantage to record the win.
Cohn led the Dukes with 16 points, while Martucci had 13 points. Milling ended with eight points and Walsh had six points and Shockey had five points. Martucci had four rebounds, while Milling and Martucci each had three assists. York shot 46.9 percent from the field and made 12 of 16 free-throw attempts (75 percent). The Dukes also hit 7 of 17 three-pointers (41.1) with Cohn going 3-for-4 from behind the line and Milling hitting a pair of threes.
York wrapped up the regular season with a 68-62 loss to Willowbrook in the West Suburban Conference crossover series game. The loss put York at 17-11 overall and the Dukes finished 7-5 in conference play.
York opened play earlier this week in the Class 4A Chicago Curie regional against Riverside-Brookfield. The Dukes are the No. 8 sectional seed in the R-B sectional, while the sectional hosts are the No. 9 seed.
If York won that game, it will face No. 1 seed Chicago Curie, No. 16 Chicago Schurz or No. 17 Leyden in the regional title game Friday at 7 p.m. at Chicago Curie with the winner heading to R-B next week for sectional play.
