Elmhurst Police have two suspects in custody following vehicular hijacking

Elmhurst Police are investigating an Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking incident that occurred Monday afternoon at an Elmhurst College parking lot near Prospect Avenue.

At 1:45 p.m. a motorist parked in the parking lot and exited his sport utility vehicle.  The victim was approached by four black male suspects in a maroon Chevrolet sedan, two of which exited and one displayed a black handgun.  The two offenders took the victim’s car keys and drove away with the victim’s SUV.  The remaining two offenders also fled in the Chevrolet sedan.  The victim was unharmed.

Responding Elmhurst police officers spotted both vehicles driving east on I-290 from the St. Charles Road area.  Elmhurst officers, with the assistance of area police agencies were able to stop the Chevrolet sedan, taking into custody an 18 year-old male, and a 17 year-old male on I-290 near 25th Avenue.

Additional Elmhurst officers with the assistance of Chicago Police and Illinois State Police attempted to stop the stolen SUV; however it fled at a high rate of speed on Independence Avenue in Chicago.  At approximately 2:08 p.m. the stolen SUV was located abandoned in an alley in the 3600 block of W. Lexington in Chicago.  A search for the two remaining offenders was performed but at this time they remain at-large.  The two suspects were described as black males wearing dark colored sweatpants and surgical masks or ski masks over their faces.  The suspects were transported to the Elmhurst Police Station and the incident is currently being investigated by detectives.

Elmhurst Police have added additional police patrols with both marked and unmarked cars.  Residents are asked to immediately call 9-1-1 to report any suspicious activity.   Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the Elmhurst Police Department at (630) 530-3050.
