In earlier action, the Trojans lost 49-37 in MSC Red Division play to a highly touted Walther Christian team.

“It was a well-played and hard-fought game,” said Timothy coach Michele Strube.

York wrestling

Heading into the holiday break the York wrestling team was 3-8 overall in dual matches and 1-0 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division duals.

York scored a recent win against Glenbrook North in a quad that also included Wheaton-Warrenville South and Glenbard East.

“We had a nice showing on that Saturday,” said York coach Mike DiNovo.

On the individual front, Antonio Gutierrez and Alex Gutierrez both took fifth place at the recent Prospect tournament. Also at Prospect, Joey Mayor, Pete Walega, Matt Cozzi and George Angelos also placed.

Anthony Cozzi and Jake Smallwood both were tied for the team lead with 7-4 records.

“Several guys are showing real progress in competition,” said DiNovo. “Anthony Cozzi and Jake Smallwood both are doing well as is Alex Gutierrez. Antonio Gutierrez is performing well after a slow start. Josh Mathiessen is developing as a heavyweight and Matt Cozzi is performing well at 126.”

DiNovo said the Dukes are focusing in on little adjustments that can yield big results. “We’re focused on winning the ‘small positions,’” he said. “Things such as clearing our arm, turning the corner and keeping our head up on our attacks. That’s starting to give us the ability to win close matches.”

Overall, DiNovo has seen plenty of progress since the season started. “The record doesn’t indicate it, but we’re a developing team,” he said. “There’s a lot of progress from last year to this year and with practices that are both hard and smart we are going to keep improving.”
