Staunton selected for Chicago Youth Symphony

For Willowbrook sophomore Emma Staunton, music is a part of life. She plays four instruments – clarinet, piano, saxophone and flute – and sings as well.
Her passion led her to audition for the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras (CYSO) this past spring and she was recently selected as a clarinetist. CYSO students have the opportunity to perform advanced orchestral repertoire and new works by contemporary composers. Their season includes weekly rehearsals, sectionals, a concerto competition, an audition seminar and concerts in some of the area’s most renowned venues.
“I love how I can express myself through music,” Emma said. “When I’m performing, there’s always this one moment when I hear all the different parts around me coming together to form a beautiful piece – and it’s an amazing feeling.”
Emma’s audition for CYSO involved playing two pieces of her choosing and two pieces selected by the CYSO in front of four judges. She began playing the clarinet in fourth grade and looks forward to enhancing her skills through the CYSO.
“I’m thrilled and honored to be part of this group, because I know it’s going to help me improve,” she said. “I’m grateful to the teachers and other students, who will challenge me and help me develop as a musician.”
At Willowbrook, Emma is a member of the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Marching Band, Pit Orchestra and Concert Choir. She plans to pursue a career as a music teacher or a professional musician.
