Pick of the Week — The event NOT to be missed…

Sunday, Sept. 3 — EWAN’s ‘Cue for a Cause

“Cue For A Cause,” a fundraiser for the Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network, will take place in the City lot at York and Vallette from 12 noon-8 p.m. This year, competitors will compete not only in the categories of best ribs and sauce but can opt to make a chicken dish as well. The highest cumulative score in all three areas will win one lucky team the title of Grand Champion. Those interested in signing up to compete should go to the website, ewanet.org and click on the ‘Cue logo. The fee is $125 per team.

Friday-Sunday, Sept. 1-3

Our Lady of Lebanon in Lombard will hold its annual Lebanese Food Festival, designed to spotlight the beauty and hospitality of Middle Eastern culture. The church is located at 950 N. Grace St. in Lombard (behind the CVS). Admission: $5 donation; food is reasonably priced with families in mind. Hours are: Friday, 5-11 p.m.; Saturday, 1-11 p.m.; and Sunday, 1-7 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 9

At 2:30 p.m.., the Elmhurst Art Museum will host an artist’s reception for Hebru Brantley whose exhibition, Forced Field, will open that day. It will be a chance to learn about his pop-infused contemporary art inspired by Japanese anime and street art pioneers Jean Michel Basquiat, Kaws and Keith Haring. Free and open to the public.

Sunday, Sept. 10

Beginning at 10 a.m., the Hot Chocolate Walk for James Fulkerson will be held on the mall of Elmhurst College. There is no entry fee, just visit the web site jameswalk.com to sign up and make donations. Walkers receive hot chocolate, brownies, cookies and a t-shirt. Sponsored by the College’s “Acts of Random Kindness” club.

Tuesday, Sept. 12

From 5-9 p.m., veterans are invited to the Elmhurst American Legion Post banquet hall for a complimentary dinner and an opportunity to learn more about programs for veterans such as certifications, college credit for military service, etc. Happy Hour begins at 5 p.m. (cash bar), a 9/11 Remembrance event will be held and dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Open to all veterans and their guests. Wednesday, Sept. 13

From 4-9 p.m., Girls Nite Out returns to Wilder Mansion for its 4th year. Come out for wine tastings, live music, and a host of activities including brief massages, food tastings, beauty services, wellness experts, artisans, jewelry for sale and much more. Friday, Sept. 15

At 5 p.m., the Elmhurst Art Museum will host the first in a series of films shown in conjunction with Hebru Brantley’s Forced Field exhibition currently on display. The first film is The Forbidden Planet (1956). Free and open to the public.

Saturday, Sept. 16

From 1-5 p.m., the third annual craft brew celebration and fundraiser will take place, hosted by the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation and Rotary Club of Elmhurst. Features more than 30 craft and microbreweries including Lagunitas, New Belgium, Blue Moon, Baderbrau, Goose Island, Exit Strategy, and more. Tickets include souvenir tasting glass, 18 beer tasting tickets, light snacks, door prizes, live music, and more under a tent on the Elmhurst History Museum grounds. Must be 21-and-over to participate. Rain or shine. Tickets are $40 early bird price until Sept. 9; $50 after Sept. 9 or at the door. VIP early entry tickets available for an additional $15. Sunday, Sept. 17

Beginning at 12:15 p.m., the Single Mother Support Events, (SHE) will meet at the Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, located at 149 Brush Hill Road, just west of the Elmhurst Center of Health. At 2:30 p.m. After lunch, there will be a mini-spa, where ladies who may not be able to afford it will receive a foot massage, manicure, hairstyle, a facial by Merle Norman, a shoulder massage by Advanced Health of Oak Brook and everyone receives a gift. Friday, Sept. 22

At 5 p.m., the Elmhurst Art Museum will host the second in a series of films shown in conjunction with Hebru Brantley’s Forced Field exhibition currently on display. The film is Sun Ra Space is the Place (1974). Free and open to the public.

Saturday, Sept. 30

• Residents are invited to take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Elmhurst Quarry Flood Control Facility, a site generally closed to the public. Tour participants will learn about the quarry’s history, visit various areas including private quarry platforms, and see how DuPage County Stormwater Management currently operates the facility to reduce flooding. Tours depart from Elmhurst History Museum via bus every 30 minutes from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and last approximately two hours. Reservations required, ticket sales start Sep. 6 and can be purchased at elmhursthistory.org (Special Events section). Co-presented by DuPage County Stormwater Management and Elmhurst History Museum. • In the evening (exact time TBA), the Committee for the Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts will be holding its 2nd Spotlight Gala at the Elmhurst Art Museum to raise funds for the ECPA. The evening will include music, song and dance along with a gourmet buffet and live auction. ECPA is a not-for-profit (501(c)(3) organization. Ongoing programs:

• From Sept. 9 – Nov. 26, the Elmhurst Art Museum is showing Hebru Brantley: Forced Field, a solo show of new work by Chicago-based world-renowned artist. Brantley’s pop-infused contemporary art is inspired by Japanese anime and the bold aesthetics of street art pioneers Jean Michel Basquiat, Kaws and Keith Haring.

• Now through Oct. 8, the Elmhurst History Museum hosts Disco Demolition: The Night Disco Died. It started as an off-beat baseball promotion called “Teen Night” designed to sell tickets at Comiskey Park and gain listeners for a fledgling FM radio station—until it devolved into one of the most infamous events in Chicago’s rich baseball history. Disco Demolition Night exploded on July 12, 1979 in the middle of a White Sox doubleheader and it remains one of the city’s most controversial sports history moments. Media sponsor: WLUP-FM. • A support group for family caregivers of older adults meets the second and fourth Thursdays of every month from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Elmhurst Public Library’s second floor study room. (Not an Elmhurst Library program.) Info: (630) 833-9665.

• The Elmhurst American Legion, T.H.B. Post No. 187, hosts a fish fry every Friday night from 6-8:30 p.m.  New York steaks are available first Friday of the month. Musical entertainment follows.
