From 2-3:30 p.m., in the Education Center, the Elmhurst History Museum offers Chicago in the 1970s: Music, Sports and Radio, featuring Dave Hoekstra, author journalist and WGN-AM Chicago weekend host. Includes a panel discussion featuring: Mike Veeck, former White Sox promotions manager and minor league team owner; Bob Chicoine, former Comiskey Park vendor at Disco Demolition night; Mitch Michaels, former WLUP program manager and rock DJ since 1971; Jim Rittenberg, general manager, Faces disco club; and Jeff Schwartz, former WLUP general sales manager. From 2-3 p.m. (perhaps longer), Lizzardo Museum of Lapidary Art presents “Start Your Rockin’ Collection,” for ages 5 to 10. Create your very own personalized rock collection. Cartons and materials for the decoration are provided. Each child can choose several rocks to start or fill in their collection carton. Rocks from home can also be brought in for identification. Take a trip back to the Disco Era and the 1970s from 10:30 a.m.-12 noon at the Elmhurst History Museum Education Center, 120 E. Park Ave. How would people who liked disco music have dressed or decorated in the late 1970s? What music did they listen to and how did they dance? Learn about disco culture and style with DJ Oliver as he spins records to explore the disco sound. Participants will make their own mini lava lamps, design record labels, and use paper dolls to create a designer disco look. Kids will end the workshop by learning one of the signature dance moves of the disco era. Appropriate for kids age 5-12 accompanied by an adult; no charge for an adult. Now through Oct. 8, the Elmhurst History Museum hosts Disco Demolition: The Night Disco Died. It started as an off-beat baseball promotion called “Teen Night” designed to sell tickets at Comiskey Park and gain listeners for a fledgling FM radio station—until it devolved into one of the most infamous events in Chicago’s rich baseball history. Disco Demolition Night exploded on July 12, 1979 in the middle of a White Sox doubleheader and it remains one of the city’s most controversial sports history moments. Media sponsor: WLUP-FM.
