Sunday, June 25 — History Museum presents Disco Explosion event

From 3-6 p.m., the Elmhurst History Museum presents a Disco Explosion Community Event, as it celebrates everything ‘70s with a little disco and a little rock ‘n’ roll. Grammy-winning rocker and songwriter Jim Peterik (Survivor, Ides of March) will perform some of his hits with School of Rock, and The Shagadelics band represents disco with funky gems from the era. Legendary White Sox organist Nancy Faust will perform ball park favorites, and Hoekstra and Natkin will be on hand to sign books. Free. Info: elmhursthistory.org or 630-833-1457.

Saturday, June 24

Geologist Sara Kurth presents an introduction to rocks and minerals starting at 10:30 a.m. at the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, 220 Cottage Hill Ave. Learn to identify minerals through basic hands-on identification including observation skills and hardness tests. Saturday and Sunday, June 24-25

York Radio Club, based in Elmhurst, will take part in a 24-hour blitz that will include nationwide radio communications, operating from three radio stations at the Elmhurst Fire Department Training Facility, 910 N. Addison. Members of the public are invited to visit any time from Saturday at 9 a.m. to Sunday at 1 p.m. Info: yorkradioclub.com

Sunday, June 25

The Elmhurst Knights of Columbus will be holding their third annual classic car show in the city parking lot located behind the KC Hall on York and Vallette. The show which starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. is open to all makes and models including scooters. Music will be provided by Flashback ’50s DJ Tony. Drinks and food will be available for purchase. This year the Knights are partnering with SOLES4SOULS, a not-for-profit group which provides shoes and clothing to those in need. Participants are being asked to bring gently worn shoes (men, women and children) which will be given to those in need. Drop off boxes will be located near the registration table. Wednesday, June 28

From 10:30 a.m.-12 noon, learn about the Art of Rock and Disco—Record Album Art — at the Elmhurst History Museum, 120 E. Park Ave. With a real DJ, listen to the different sounds of classic rock and disco music and learn about how artists expressed themselves via artwork on their album covers.  Families can try making their own album art. Tuesday, July 4

The 13th annual Elmhurst Running Club 4 on the 4th race will step off at 7:15 a.m., starting and finishing at Elmhurst College. A 1-kilometer kids (12-and-under) race follows at 8:25 a.m. The 4 on the 4th’s beneficiary is the Elmhurst Children’s Assistance Foundation. This year, the race will honor Darryl May, a club and race founder who passed away earlier this year. The race is presented by InMotion Foot & Ankle Center in Elmhurst.

Wednesday, July 26

Learn about disco culture and style by recreating a disco club in the Elmhurst History Museum Education Center, 125 E. Park Ave., from 10:30 a.m.-12 noon. Families will help make “Club EHM” and end the workshop by learning the moves of the Disco Era.  Limit: 40 participants per program. Appropriate for kids age 5-12 accompanied by an adult. Wednesday, Aug. 9

Participants in the Elmhurst Historical Museum’s Family Fun Series’ Wacky Sports Promotions event from 10:30 a.m.-12 noon at the Elmhurst History Museum, 120 E. Park Ave., will learn about how Disco Demolition Night was one of many promotions that have attracted and entertained audiences at sports events for years, including promotions that worked … and those that didn’t.  Participants will plan their own crazy promotional event and design their own t-shirt and buttons.  Limit: 40 participants. Ongoing programs:

• Now through Oct. 8, the Elmhurst History Museum hosts Disco Demolition: The Night Disco Died. It started as an off-beat baseball promotion called “Teen Night” designed to sell tickets at Comiskey Park and gain listeners for a fledgling FM radio station—until it devolved into one of the most infamous events in Chicago’s rich baseball history. Disco Demolition Night exploded on July 12, 1979 in the middle of a White Sox doubleheader and it remains one of the city’s most controversial sports history moments. Media sponsor: WLUP-FM. • A support group for family caregivers of older adults meets the second and fourth Thursdays of every month from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Elmhurst Public Library’s second floor study room. (Not an Elmhurst Library program.) Info: (630) 833-9665.

• The Elmhurst American Legion, T.H.B. Post No. 187, hosts a fish fry every Friday night from 6-8:30 p.m.  New York steaks are available first Friday of the month. Musical entertainment follows.
