Bond set at $4 million for Addison man accused of double murder

Jorge Vargas

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Addison Director of Police William Hayden announced today that bond has been set for an Addison man accused of killing two men on Saturday, May 6, 2017. Jorge L. Vargas, 20 (d.o.b. 1-18-1997) of 537 N. Valerie Lane, Addison, appeared in Bond Court this afternoon where Judge Bryan Chapman set bond at $4 million with 10% to apply. Vargas has been charged with two counts of First Degree Murder and one count of Attempt (First Degree Murder).
On May 6, 2017, at approximately 1:14 p.m., Addison Police Officers responded to a call of shots fired at the intersection of Elizabeth Drive and Denise Court. Upon their arrival, officers found a vehicle crashed into a tree on the southwest corner of the intersection. Two male victims, Alberto Rios, 20, of Villa Park and Kevin Bustos, 17, of Addison, were discovered unresponsive in the vehicle. Both men were transported to local hospitals where they were both pronounced deceased from gunshot wounds. It is alleged that at approximately 1:14 p.m. the vehicle, driven by Bustos, was parked in front of an apartment where Vargas was located. It is alleged that Vargas opened fire on the vehicle from the apartment, striking Bustos and Rios. It is further alleged that Bustos attempted to drive away but crashed the car into a nearby tree. An investigation into the shooting led authorities to Vargas who was located in Fairmont City, Illinois, just outside East St. Louis, Sunday evening and returned to DuPage County the following day.
“The allegations against Mr. Vargas, that he opened fire in the middle of a Saturday afternoon in a residential area, killing two individuals, are completely outrageous and will be met with the full force of the law,” Berlin said. “While nothing can be done to bring Alberto and Kevin back to those who loved them, the outstanding work of the Addison Police Department will allow us to bring a strong prosecution against the man who allegedly took their lives. I would like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Steve Knight for his tireless efforts these past few days.”

“The quick and successful apprehension of this suspect is a direct result of the excellent and hard work put in by the first responding officers from the Addison Police Department as well as the Investigations Division and Evidence Technicians of the Addison Police Department,” Director Hayden said. “The Addison Police would like to thank the many agencies that assisted in this investigation, the Elmhurst Police Department, DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, Fairmont Police Department and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.”
Vargas’ next court appearance is scheduled for May 22, 2017 in front of Judge George Bakalis. If convicted on both counts, Vargas faces a mandatory sentence of natural life in prison.  Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.  A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
