More than 37,000 pounds of electronics and several thousand more pounds of clothing, building supplies and other materials were recycled, reused and kept out of landfills as a result of the annual Elmhurst College Recycling Extravaganza.
Held in partnership with the City of Elmhurst, the environmental education group SCARCE and DuPage County, the April 29 Recycling Extravaganza was an opportunity for residents of Elmhurst and nearby communities to donate not only electronics but also clothing, bicycles, books, appliances and much more. In addition, people brought 10,000 pounds of paper to be shredded and recycled.
By the end of the three-hour event, 844 cars had come through the Recycling Extravaganza bringing, among other things:
· 3,866 pounds of textiles and non-textiles
· 120 boxes of books
· 44 bicycles
· 250 pairs of eyeglasses
· 1,500 pounds of building materials
· Nearly 2,000 pounds of fluorescent light bulbs and tubes
· 530 pounds of alkaline batteries
Many of the donations benefited nonprofit and service organizations, including the DuPage Habitat for Humanity ReStore, the Working Bikes Cooperative, SCARCE, the Elmhurst Lions Club and Goodwill Industries.
