Saturday, April 8 – Lake Effect band to perform as fundraiser for ESO

From 12 noon-4 p.m., the band Lake Effect will perform a benefit fundraiser concert at Pinstripes in Oak Brook for the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra. Tickets for the benefit are $50 for adults; $30 for youth 13-17; and $20 for children 5-12. Six percent of the ticket price is tax-deductible. Raffle tickets to help support ESO programs are $10 each or 3 for $25. To purchase or reserve tickets, call 630-941-0202 or visit elmhurstsymphony.org. Reservations are due by March 31.

Saturday, April 8

• From 8:30-11 a.m., Immanuel Lutheran Church and School at 142 E. Third St. is holding a special Easter celebration. 8:30 a.m.—pancake breakfast (free will donation); 8:45-11 a.m.—petting zoo, depending on the weather; at 10 a.m., the Easter Story devotion followed by a raffle for prize baskets. Easter egg hunt for kindergarteners and toddlers begins after the Easter Story; afterwards, another Egg Hunt will be held for children in grades 1-3. Info: immanuelelmhurst.org. • From 8 a.m. to 12 noon, Boy Scout Troop 17 will hold its sixth annual ‘Red White and Blue Pancake Breakfast’ at Christ United Methodist Church, 920 S Swain Ave. across from Jackson School. Tickets, available at the door, are $8/adults, $6/seniors and children 5-13. Children under 5 are free.

• Starting at 10 a.m. at Elmhurst City Hall, 209 N. York St. The Elmhurst Senior Commission will be hosting a community conversation on “maintaining a positive outlook as we age,” Prepare to learn helpful information concerning issues that arise as we age.  Maintaining a positive outlook while coping with the challenges of illness, medication effects, fear of outliving one’s assets, loneliness, loss of a spouse, and loss of a child will be explored. • Starting at 1:30 p.m. at the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, 220 Cottage Hill Ave., the museum will host “Rockin’ Jewelry for Kids,” a beginner’s class for youths ages 8-16 that allows them to make their own gemstone jewelry to keep. Choose two different types of jewelry to make with stones from the Museum Shop and learn how to work with jeweler’s tools. Great for the Girl Scout Jewelry Badge. Sunday, April 9

• From 12:15-2:30 p.m., the Single Mothers Support Group will hold a luncheon with child care from 1:15-2:30 p.m. at the Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 W. Brush Hill Road. The program will feature Eve Senti who will present “Is Your Life Out Of Control?” Creative useful crafts will be made by each mother. There will be free, gently-used children’s clothes and a limited number of adult items available. No reservations necessary. Info: [email protected]

• Beginning at 2 p.m., the Elmhurst College Concert Choir, Chamber Singers and Women’s Chorus will perform their Spring Choral Concert in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College. Free and open to the public. All seats are general seating and the venue is accessible to the disabled.

Thursday, April 13

At 8 p.m., teens are invited to grab a flashlight and come out to Wilder Park where the Elmhurst Park District is hosting a Flashlight Egg Hunt for the teens only. Join your friends in the frenzy as you search for prize eggs filled with candy, gift certificates and other great prizes. This event is free and ages 11-16 are welcome.

Friday, April 14

From 1-2:15 p.m., “School’s Out Family Workshop: Our Home Story,” will take place at the Elmhurst History Museum’s Education Center, 120 E. Park Ave. Families will tell the story of their home and create a memory keepsake. Participants are asked to bring a 3” x 5” picture of their home or to send a digital image of their home to [email protected] prior to the workshop. Saturday, April 15

• All are invited to come out to Wilder Park to celebrate spring with the whole family, including the four-legged ones as the Elmhurst Park District sponsors its annual Easter Egg Hunt, presented by Edward-Elmhurst Health and The Schiller Team. Visit with the Easter Bunny and be ready for the egg hunt at 10 a.m. sharp.

The egg hunt will be followed by the Doggie Eggstravaganza at 10:30 a.m., when the fun goes to the dogs. Prizes will be awarded for best doggie costume, including Best Dressed, Most Creative and Owner Look-Alike, so make sure to dress for the occasion. Free and open to the public.

• Come out to Spring Road by the Gazebo for the annual Easter Egg Hunt, which begins promptly at 1 p.m. The Easter Bunny will be available to meet and greet beginning at 12:30 p.m., so don’t forget the camera. Thousands of candy-filled eggs will scattered throughout Wild Meadows Trace where kids are invited to hunt once the signal sounds promptly at 1 p.m. Bring your own Easter basket! Sponsored by the Spring Road Business Association.

Wednesday, April 19

From 9:30-10: 30 a.m., come to “House and Home Story Time” that will take place at the Elmhurst History Museum’s Education Center, 120 E. Park Ave. as we explore houses and homes in our latest temporary exhibit. Children and their caregivers will do an activity together after reading the story. Thursday, April 20

From 2-3 p.m. at the Elmhurst History Museum’s Education Center, 120 E. Park Ave., a lecture will be presented, titled, “Understanding the National Housing Crisis of 2008.” The U.S. subprime mortgage crisis was a nationwide banking emergency that contributed to the deepest recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Sunday, April 30

• At 3 p.m., the Elmhurst Choral Union and Orchestra will present Totally Mozart at Hammerschmidt Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College. Tickets are $25 for adults, $23 for seniors and $10 for youth (7-22). Tickets are available from elmhurstchoralunion.org , 800-838-3006, or at the door. The concert is funded in part by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

• From 2-4 p.m., meet at the Elmhurst History Museum’s Education Center, 120 E. Park Ave., for Elmhurst Neighborhood Tour: How the City Developed Over Time.” Explore the history of different neighborhoods throughout Elmhurst during this bus tour, beginning with the 1870s when people built homes to escape post-fire Chicago. Ongoing programs:

• A support group for family caregivers of older adults meets the second and fourth Thursdays of every month from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Elmhurst Public Library’s second floor study room. (Not an Elmhurst Library program.) Info: (630) 833-9665.

• “By All Accounts: The Story of Elmhurst,” is at the Elmhurst History Museum, 120 E. Park Ave. Take an interactive journey through Elmhurst history. Experience engaging towers filled with one-of-a-kind objects, compelling photos, and first-person video accounts from locals. Check out the award-winning, hands-on tabletop map that explores Elmhurst past and present, and take a seat in the mini-theatre to view an original documentary on Elmhurst history. View new additions to the exhibit including a feature on veterans and the Glos Mansion history. Admission: Free. Hours: 1-5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday and Sunday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. • The Elmhurst American Legion, T.H.B. Post No. 187, hosts a fish fry every Friday night from 6-8:30 p.m.  New York steaks are available first Friday of the month. Musical entertainment follows.
