Sat. March 4 — The Elmhurst St. Patrick’s Day Parade
The 21st annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade will step off from Wilson Street on Spring Road at 12 noon, but there will be music and other entertainment taking place up and down Spring Road prior to the parade. Bring the family out, dress for the weather (and in green!) and spend some time at the merchants and establishments on Spring Road. The trolley will be operating during the morning and after the parade until 5:30 p.m.

Friday, March 3
From 1-2:15 p.m., the Elmhurst History Museum is holding a School’s Out family workshop on Fairy Garden Jars. Kids and their caregivers are invited to come to the Museum’s Education Center to create tiny gardens to capture fairies, as the talented artist Marion Mahony Griffin believed you could. Appropriate for all ages.

Saturday, March 4
Children will become dinosaur detectives with “Paleontologist Illinois Bones” to learn about the world of dinosaurs at “Dinosaur Discoveries. This 50-minute interactive lecture for those ages 4 years to adult will be held at the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, 220 Cottage Hill Ave., starting at 2 p.m. The cost is $5 per person and reservations are recommended. • Geologist Sara Kurth presents an introduction to rocks and minerals at the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, 220 Cottage Hill Ave., starting at 10:30 a.m. Learn to identify minerals through basic hands-on identification including observation skills and hardness tests during this 75-minute presentation for ages 8 years to adult. • From 1-2:30 p .m., a special off-site open house will be hosted by the Elmhurst History Museum in Rogers Park, near the family home of Marion Mahony Griffin. It will be a rare opportunity to view her 1931 Ural, Fairies Feeding the Herons. Free to attend, but participants are responsible for their own transportation. No reservations required. • At 7 p.m. when guitarist Colin Davin and the Elmhurst Dance Theatre of the DuPage Dance Academy join the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra in an evening of Latin melodies. There will be a silent auction fundraiser with proceeds to benefit the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra. At 5:45 p.m., enjoy a discussion led by Dr. Ted Hatmaker. The concert takes place at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 W. Brush Hill Road. Handicapped accessible parking and facilities; parking is free. • The District 205 Foundation for Educational Excellence will hold its annual gala at The Hyatt Lodge on McDonald’s Campus in Oak Brook. Beginning at 3 p.m., the Elmhurst Symphony will present “We’ve Got Rhythm,” a program of animated Latin melodies, at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 W. Brush Hill Road. Members of the Elmhurst Dance Theater of the DuPage Dance Academy will perform as well. An instrument “petting zoo,” takes place from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m., sponsored by Luscombe Music, for a hands-on opportunity to try different instruments. At 6 p.m. the 21st annual Student Chess Tournament will be held in the York High School Commons, 355 W. St. Charles Road. Students by grade level: 2nd grade, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6-8th grade, and high school. York St. The Elmhurst Senior Commission will be hosting a community conversation on “maintaining a positive outlook as we age,” Prepare to learn helpful information concerning issues that arise as we age. Maintaining a positive outlook while coping with the challenges of illness, medication effects, fear of outliving one’s assets, loneliness, loss of a spouse, and loss of a child will be explored. • CLOSING March 12, the Elmhurst Historical Museum presents “In Her Own Right: Marion Mahony Griffin. More than a talented artist and architect: Griffin was the backbone of the Prairie School of Architecture who brought the work of many more famous architects to life—including her husband, Walter Burley Griffin, and the inimitable genius Frank Lloyd Wright. This biographical exhibit explores her life, her work, and her legacy.
• Extended through March 26, Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art continues its special exhibit, “Fabergé Style Carvings,” which features replicas of Fabergé’s original hard stone carving designs including flower studies, figurines and animals made in Idar-Oberstein, Germany.
• A support group for family caregivers of older adults meets the second and fourth Thursdays of every month from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Elmhurst Public Library’s second floor study room. (Not an Elmhurst Library program.) Info: (630) 833-9665.
• “By All Accounts: The Story of Elmhurst,” is at the Elmhurst History Museum, 120 E. Park Ave. Take an interactive journey through Elmhurst history. Experience engaging towers filled with one-of-a-kind objects, compelling photos, and first-person video accounts from locals. Check out the award-winning, hands-on tabletop map that explores Elmhurst past and present, and take a seat in the mini-theatre to view an original documentary on Elmhurst history.
